Price of Turning Down a Shaft?

Burn all jump cues

I have a new 13 mm. regular shaft and want a 12.5 mm pro taper. Is there enough wood to do that and if so what is the average cost to turn it? Thank you. Johnnyt

Thanks Dawg. Johnnyt

No problem. I don't know if you know Wayne but he's a great guy been working there forever. He makes a custom cue line as well I think he calls them "killer cues" (yeah, I know... original name, lol) some of his cues are pretty sick, Ive seen some tiger maple shafts he's made that are sweet. If you get a chance ask him to show you his razorback cue he made for himself. He's been working on cues forever, he does all my wraps, ferrules, tips, etc etc.. Never had a complaint.

What's the price nowadays? And, how does that process work, say, with a shaft with an ivory ferrule? A lot of custom cues seem to come with two shafts with 13mm tips. Can you just set a lathe to take off 3mm the whole length of a shaft? Or, does the craftsman have to remove the ferrule and replace it with a different ferrule after the wood part of the cue is taken down? Same process for a micarta/LBM/etc ferrule?

Thanks.

After removing the tip you can measure the wall thickness of the ferule.
If it is too thin to take another cut on it, then a new ferrule is going to be required.
The that ferule was Ivory, you aren't going to be able to get a new ferule starting piece for it, unless the cue maker already has a stock of Ivory on hand.

Keith Josey's site says he charges $20 for each mm turned down. Also says he doesn't like turning shafts lower than 12.6...
