Pride And Pool Dont Mix Sometimes

I am an old country boy and i have a great deal of pride. We Capers (my last name) pride ourselves on being able to play any sport we try better than average..god given gift to the Capers men..has always been that way. Well pool i s the same..My dad was a great player my two brothers play pretty good. One of them is my speed or maybe a ball better.

But i have buddy who is a jam up player..who i have beaten on occasion heads up but nothing consistent. When we play now he gives me the seven ball and he gets the breaks. For a while there he was dusting my azz with the seven ball..but slowly but surely i kept at it and (switched back to a predator shaft) The spot started to not matter. Last night i won more sets with the seven spot than he beat me and when he did win it was only by 1 or 2 games. He said man your getting damn right hard to beat with the seven.

I told him all i want is for him to say.."Tony i cant give you the seven" I know that alot of other guys he plays that dont play my speed want to play him even. He tells them let me give you the seven ball just to help both of us out. It makes him play harder because of the spot and it even the match up. Alot of people turn down the spot just to be able to say they lost, but they lost "Heads Up" . Its like saving face...but almost knowing they are going to lose. But dont want the loss with the seven ball attached.

I wonder why people feel like they lesson them selves with a spot. To me it is a chance to challenge myself to grow past the spot. It give me something to aspire to ..yeah i could play heads up and keep trying to beat him..but the losses that i have to suffer through do nothing but lesson a person confidence in them selves.

I say give your self small obtainable goals like getting past be spoted the seven..to where u play even ..dont just jump out of the tree so to speak. Anyone esle have to deal with something like this...just curious.

If you are both very good players then i would say with that spot (you get the 7 he gets the breaks) that you are actually spotting him.

i would like to think that..but he really can catch a gear on me and if i miss any ball on my runout to the seven..i usually dont get to shoot again and if i do its out of a deadnut safety. The real issue is why some people are willing to lose but want to say "Well we where playing even" seem a bit out of sorts..to me i think taking the spot makes us both better players in the long run..he doest want me to beat him, because it shows im catching up to his level and i dont want him to beat me cause it shows how far i have to go to get to his level.:)

He's not giving you that great of a spot. He gets the break, and you get the 7 out. I'd give that spot to someone I play even up with all day. If I get the chance to break every rack, that's a huge advantage. Also, if I am down to the 6-9 ball, I will rarely screw up with 3 balls left on the table, unless it's a screwed up layout. Try playing him with the 7 out, and winner breaks, and see how the set plays out. I guarantee he won't give you the 7 out anymore. Then you'll get "I can't give you the 7".

Getting a spot can have a psych disadvantage - literally it's in your head. If you're a really self-doubter, it's an added disadvantage to your lower pool skills than your opponent. But you must solve that problem yourself because every needs a spot sometimes.

If being spotted the 7 bothers you then take another route with a superior player. Ask to play race to 15 and ask for a 4 game spot. Then you're beating the superior player at individual games of 9 ball.

I once gave a spot of the 8 ball to a pretty good 9 ball player and I compensated (to my advantage and his disadvantage) in situations where I made a ball on the break but didn't like the lay of the table by calling a roll out and pocketing the 8 with a deliberate shot. From that point on, it's an even game. ;)

I thought pocketed balls on the pushout were spotted?

Not during that specific match

We had agreed to not respot pocketed balls during the match. It was an "action" match. ;)

i can see where a spot can be phycological disadvantage..if you allow it to be. i just chuckle at the people who dont take it for reasons of pride. Its funny my buddy just called me on my cell while i was responding to this thread. he asked ..what time we meeting..i laughed and said for what ..he replied ...for the beating im gona put on you. I lauged and told him "Jus go ahead and say it buddy..u cant give me the seven" he laughed and said that i was gona quite tonight because of the beating. I told him i get off at 5ish so were gona meet up and play. Im gona dust him off tonight and lay the seven ball issue to rest haha

You are triple slick, aren't you?! You should keep this horrible advice to yourself, before somebody gets hurt pulling the same cvap.

If I were playing you and you did that, I'd shoot the 9 in the hole next and say whatever you said when you shot the 8 in. Then I would punch you.:D

Oh. That explains it...NOT.

I'd still punch you. Maybe even twice, coz you are trying to scam for $...:D :D

You must provide me a photo of you.

Black-balled,

You must provide me a photo of you so I won't ever make the mistake of trying to scam you for $$$ ;) Of course, with you I'd spot you the 4 so I couldn't shoot all those balls in on the roll out ;)

Don't do what The Woim does, it ain't polite!

Hey Woim...
In a strange way its good that you've snuck back in here and starting posting again. :p You are well worth the entertainment value. A lot of people may want to punch you (and some actually have) but damn, you sure have earned every bit of it!
