Pro Nicknames

It's not the nickname game it's self that gets me it's the repetition in the nicknames that kills ..... How many Reds and Hurricanes can you know before you get to the point of total confusion .... I think that a nickname is ok as long as it has some kind of purpose don't go around calling yourself something absolutely stupid and expect them not to laugh a you everytime you introduce yourself with this nickname ..... As for myself I have had quite a few nicknames pinned to me I mean you can't be 5'1 and someone not have something to say about it..... Lil Bit Lil momma hence the sn lilmisspoolplaya but I have to say my favorite (not really --- but you can't type sarcasm) Striderite ... comes from the striderite kids shoes ... I think some are ok to go by as long as the person who holds the nickname justifies it in some way

I hear a lot of nicknames came about as a method of sharking people or goading people to play. Fats used to do this all the time. Giving people nicknames that would just irk their opponents. Fats said that "Handsome" Danny Jones gave himself that nickname before Fats could give him one. He also called that hustler "Cannonball" "BB".

Speaking of Henry McCloud "Lotsapoppa", there's an accu-stats video from one of Grady's legends tournaments from the early '90s which has him playing another player with a cool nickname: Jimmy Mataya, aka "Pretty Boy Floyd", the notorious 1930s bankrobber.

Snooker players used to have nicknames of weather phenomens. Such as Whirlwind, Taifoon, Hurricane etc. Nowadays they have also different nicknames such as Rocket etc...

Minnesota Fats wasn't a nickname. He had his name legally changed to Minnesota Fats not long after the movie "The Hustler" came out.

When he did that, he had never even been to Minnesota before, his name at that time was Chicago Fats.... :D

Steve Davis
"Nugget" in snooker
"Romford Slim" in pool

I don't think many will address him using either nickname. His name is far too legendary anyway...

I think that these days the nicknames cheapen the game, are made up by people who have nothing to do with pool and are just plain BS. The Duchess of Doom.....give me a break!

You say this because you are doomed to be called Jimbo for the rest of your life.

Let the espn guys do what they will with nicknames...but if you don't have a nickname around the pool hall then you don't go there enough or you can't play.

Buddy's real name is Cecil.

Hi Eric,

Several years ago I saw Buddy at his cue booth. I said "good morning Cecil". He replied "you'all don't know me good enough to call me Cecil". It's stuck with me through the years. It always brings a smile when I see him!

"Tillamook" Dave...cause he always goes for the cheese...I said that to some people while playing in a tourney on Monday about a "Big" Dave (6'6") we play against. I think it is going to stick with him now.

To Kyle

You win the prize!!!! He was Rudolph Wanderone. Some called him "NEW YORK FATS" , others called him"FATTY". If he had played all the games he said he did he would have been about 950 years old when he passed. If he won half as much money as he claimed he did he would have been traveling around in a Lear Jet.
He had a T.V. show called Celebrity Billiards. Variuos stars came and he played them 8 Ball. Did he win ? Of course. After the match he would shoot a trick shot to dazzle the audience. He got dazzled himself one night.....Shot a spot shot 4 cushion bank ....missed it four times in a row and on the fifth try as it came around short he hit it with his cue and it caught the corner and hung in the hole. I never cared that much for him....he did generate some interest in pool but not for any of his accomplishments. When people heard his name the pictured Jackie Gleason from "The Hustler."

Titanic Jerry

Fatty was called double smarts fats or triple smart fats before new york fats. This according to him in his book Bank Shot

If you are worried about nicknames then why not get chris berman to commentate the pool matches, that would spice it up some, he makes up the best nicknames.
