Pro Nicknames

Aside frpm Minnesotta Fats, who I don't ever responded to his birth name, do the pro players care or use their 'nicknames'? I think most of them sound stupid as hell. The Kentucky Colonel, I thought that was for KFC. The Dutchess of Doom, yeah Allison looks real evil. The only 2 nicknames that kinda fit IMO are the scorpion and the black widow, but even still no one calls then that. They sound like they belong on WWF, or WWE as it is nowadays. Either way, it is pretty rediculous IMO.

I think nicknames are cool though they aren't what they used to be, "Minnesota Fats" , "Jersey Red", and "Fast Eddie", those are cool nick names. I think the problem with nicknames nowadays is that people try to make up their own rather than just go with the names others give to them.

i can't see thornfeldt signing her name, helena "the sledgehammer" thornfeldt.

i guesse it makes for good tv. you know just like wrestling or something like that...the announcer shouts out their nickname crowd goes wild etc etc.

Minnesota Fats wasn't a nickname. He had his name legally changed to Minnesota Fats not long after the movie "The Hustler" came out.

I think that these days the nicknames cheapen the game, are made up by people who have nothing to do with pool and are just plain BS. The Duchess of Doom.....give me a break!

I agree, the nicknames cheapen it and make it sound like a folly or a circus act. If I ever make it big, I will be sure to denounce any name given to me by Mitch Lawrence.

hey,

What about the much respected Steve "never missed a rack"?

For the dummies; Steve Mizerack.

That is some nickname...

Tom Penrose

Danny Bassavich is more well-known as "Kid Delicious"

George San Souci is more well-known as "Ginky"

Buddy Hall's nickname is so well-known that I don't even know his real name (It's not "Buddy")

Glen Rogers is more well-known as "Piggy Banks"

Charlie Bryant is more well-known as "Hillbilly"

These are just a few top players who have cool nicknames.

LOL nicknames are cool. At school when we were getting good we thought we had better give ourselves some nicknames. "The Mechanic", "The Surgeon"....mine was "The Machine". Some of the local guys at the redneck bar call me "Pockets". Which I could deal with I guess.

what about RON" everythings funny when your making big money" wiseman...lol

Well since the money wouldn't be coming from my pockets...you'd have to call my backer "Empty Pockets". Just call me A-hole . HEHE

mkuamkua,

I asked Ron about that in Reno. He told me it was in honor of his late friend Tony Ellen. I believe it was Tonys saying. Does anyone know for sure?

Those nicknames I get. It's not that I hate nicknames, but the majority of thenm are just rediculous. If I ran into a guy calling himself Piggy Banks, trust me I am getting a hell of a spot in a game of banks, if I get an offer from the Dutchess of Doom, am I supposed to run and hide? I like and respect the names you mentioned above because they are given to them most likely when they were young or by their peers. My nickname is Buddha, and if you ever met me you'd know why. What I do disagree with is having a nickname just for the sake of having a nickname.

Some nicknames used to describe a players style of play sound good, like Luc "Machine Gun" Salvas. Nicknames are frequent in most sports and have been around in pool for as long as I can remember.
