Pro Pool Player "Groupies"

Interesting tidbits, or food for thought, if you will:

1. A supposed-Filipino who uses Floyd Mayweather Jr. as an "example." (Hint: wouldn't he have used another more modern-day example right from "his" own country? Oh, say, a certain someone named Manny?)

3. Has anyone ever seen this "Lucky" compadre that the OP speaks of, in any videos (even impromptu ad-hoc cell phone videos captured right there in PI that litter YouTube)? For that matter, has *anyone* ever see Efren hand-off his cue to someone else to screw and unscrew?

BIG HINT!!! never claimed to be a Pinoy, I"m Kano, lived here a long.....time..

"IF" you don't know who "Lucky" is??? U don't have a clue.

The next time you see Efren...ask him about "Lucky".

First of all this is utter Baloney! I have seen Efren, Francisco and many other top Pinoy players in action over there a million times now. Typically they enter a room (poolroom) very quietly and unobtrusively with little or no fanfare. If they have a big match set up you would never know it by watching them. They may socialize a bit with a few friends, head over to the table and casually take out their cue and hit a few balls around. More often than not they have come in with maybe one or two companions, if not alone!

These are low key guys who don't need an "entourage" for anything. I have seen at times various people who I would categorize as followers, gathering around Efren or another top Pinoy at tournaments and just hanging out with them. This is not unusual for any top player anywhere to have people who want to socialize with them. Heck, I might be one of them, so maybe I'm a groupie too!

P.S. I do know Lucky and have even played pool with him (Eight Ball for 1,000p a game). He claims to have been Efren's mentor. Who knows and who cares? Not me, that's for damn sure.

If you know Lucky, then you know he's an easy out....His whole game is centered around the fact that he's part of Efren's inner circle. A "Hanger on". You can't deny Efren's reverence in the PI is only second to Manny Pacquiao. Like you said..."hanger's on", I called it "groupies" Same, Same Diba???

I am sick and tired of your idiotic new threads. Speaking as a female, this thread here is insulting to women in general. I mean, the nerve of you!

Entourage is one thing, but groupies? Efren is married.

Let's start a thread about those with brown noses who are pro player testicle danglers. You know what I'm talking about, the people who like to create brand-new threads each and every single day about how great Philippines and their Filipino players are.

Wipe your nose, Pangit.

I don't think the poster intended any harm - he was just being playful, except that he accidentally used a word that is offensive to women when used in the context of American pop culture. It is not that offensive overseas because the "g......" word does not exist outside of the local syntax. In fact, "Pangit" is a lot more offensive than the "g......." word over there. Try calling a stranger who happens to be the scion of a prominent family "Pangit" and you could end up in the city morgue the next day. The fact that he is using an offensive word as a user name suggests to me that he is not to be taken seriously, and that everything he says is in jest and good-natured fun.

Having said that, what he describes as an "entourage" is nothing more than an expression of Filipino hospitality and the desire of people to be on your good side in the hope that you will share your blessings with the less fortunate of them. When I play golf at a golf and country club in Tagaytay, somebody carries an umbrella to shield me from the oppressive tropical heat. Another one wipes the sweat off my brow with a towel, and still another caddy whips out a cigarrette lighter and lights me up when he sees me reach for my Marlboros. The caddy also doubles as a field trainer and coaches me on how to swing, where to aim, and even volunteers to move the ball surreptitiously if you are criminally inclined to cheat. At the end of the day, you get a good massage cum rubdown at the dressing room. None of of these services are quoted in the price. These guys do this because they love to please you, and you should be grateful. These caddies are just trying to be of help and hoping that you would be generous enough to give them a tip at the end of the day.

This is a feudal society where 10% of the population controls 90% of the wealth. Only 100 of the the weathiest families rule the country behind the scene. So if being hangers-on or voluntarily joining an entourage will put food on the table, so be it, and may God bless them, because they also serve who only stand and wait, according to St. Theresa de Avila, the patron saint of maids.

Cheers,

F

The thing is...I "used" to be a tourist...visit the PI a month at a time...Everything is beautiful. Just happy to be in the Mecca of pool.

When you have lived here for several years, 365 days a year, you notice things "tourist" don't notice.

About 5 years ago Efren played Mike Segal in the "King of the Hill" tourney, won the biggest payday in pool history 500 thousand where he absolutely dominated, "did he ever actually get his money"??? Who decided Mike got a free Pass to the Finals anyway???

I digress. At the time I lived in AC and was eating breakfast at the VFW on perimeter road, reading one of the local newspapers as normal. There was an article about the tourney and Efren was interviewed. He said something like "I didn't know I had so many relatives". "Balato", look it up...basically means where is my slice of the pie. Crab mentality.

Granted "ALL" Pinoy Pro's don't have a "Posse", but it's common. Efren certainly does when he's in country...or course they don't go overseas with him. Generally, Lucky and Efren's younger brother are attending to everything. I've stayed in the same hotel as him, saw arrive and leave. He didn't carry anything.....Cue Case, luggage...nothing. I'm guessing Efren doesn't like the attention...but it's just the way it is. And his Personal assistant's were PROUD to carry it for him. Street Cred. Onobayan, he's with Efren.

What do you think Lucky's job is??? Efren. His meal ticket. Granted Lucky has a mild disability. One leg is way shorter than the other. But he "could" get a real job. It's too easy to ride Efren's coat tails.

I call 'em "Groupies".

The next time you see Efren...ask him about "Lucky".

I know Lucky well and I sometimes have a clue! Here he is in the maroon shirt.
