Pro Pool Player "Groupies"

The city at subic bay is olangapo .Those are not gruppys they carry each others stuff and hold hands so they dont pick each others pockets. thats what we were told in the 60,s in the navy.just saying

I doubt it - there are hangers-on in every country and every walk of life. I suspect the level of hanger-on varies on 1. how glamorous/well paid the sport or activity, and 2. how poor the country is.

In PI, the answer to both is 'very'.

Extraordinary thread, with the OP being the most rational, unusually. Still, this place does love a good witch hunt.

I've played Efen in AC and Puerto Galera. Seen him play many times in the PI, never aboard.

As humble as he is, I've yet to see him carry his own cue to a match, screw it...unscrew it. His childhood Com padre "Lucky" with the platform shoe takes care of that for him. They look like brothers.

Even Class "C" Pro's have minions carrying their proverbial "Jock-Straps"...

First of all this is utter Baloney! I have seen Efren, Francisco and many other top Pinoy players in action over there a million times now. Typically they enter a room (poolroom) very quietly and unobtrusively with little or no fanfare. If they have a big match set up you would never know it by watching them. They may socialize a bit with a few friends, head over to the table and casually take out their cue and hit a few balls around. More often than not they have come in with maybe one or two companions, if not alone!

These are low key guys who don't need an "entourage" for anything. I have seen at times various people who I would categorize as followers, gathering around Efren or another top Pinoy at tournaments and just hanging out with them. This is not unusual for any top player anywhere to have people who want to socialize with them. Heck, I might be one of them, so maybe I'm a groupie too! :wink:

P.S. I do know Lucky and have even played pool with him (Eight Ball for 1,000p a game). He claims to have been Efren's mentor. Who knows and who cares? Not me, that's for damn sure.

If you've not closely followed PangitPoint-gate, you're missing what many respondees are talking about. And, just to stick to the facts, read Jay H.'s response, someone who's actually been to PI countless times (unlike, as it's suspected, the OP who created this nonsense thread).

This thread went off the rails before it had a chance. Not that it deserved one. Why hasn't someone just deleted this thread? I don't see what it has to do with billiards. Just a bunch of pissing and moaning...rightful or not, the current thread has no point or purpose. Especially regarding the game of billiards.

you guys ever try the pool cue in the beer bottle trick to straighten your stroke? i got some chick to let me work on my stroke the same way but without the beer bottle if ya get me. it pays to play above your head some times!

The word groupie has evolved in street slang. It has no sexist connotation to get one's undies all in a bundle over. Groupies in pool context are just tag along wannabees that come in all sizes, shapes and sexes. Usually with no visible life.

Actually I would agree with this. Groupies did used to refer to females attracted to rock musicians. Not necessarily the same meaning today. Perhaps the OP should have been more precise?
