Pro Tennis is DEAD!

When it comes to scandals cycling usually leads the pack. Between shit like this and dope-central its a wonder pro cycling still exists. Sagan is a badass, btw.

Though the arguement could be made that cycling is the only highly visible pro sport that has actionable concern about doping.

I thing it is the result of the fact that $ comes from sponsors and sponsors dont want to dump 8-9 figures of cash money, only to be told the win their team had has been taken away, or the star of the team has been suspended.

And then most sponsors are only there for a couple years. Brutal business and sport.

Im surprised a smart man like Hu would even ask this question. A bunch of low level hicks throwing matches where you cant get a bet bigger than $2-300? I dont think so.

A buddy from high-school rode as a domestique in the mid-80's. He had fun but basically made no money. Got to see Europe and meet some of the greats but he was basically just a slave for the leaders. Tough i guess.

It’s definitely pool related IMO. It has all of the parallels to pool match fixing.

My opinion is it won’t hurt the tennis image in the slightest. It’s too goody-good-shoes now and for decades for this to negatively affect it.

IMO.

Or maybe it is the fact that these are all low level skeeves that have nothing to do with the guys who are actually good?

The "stars" are playing in the biggest tournaments with huge prize funds. No need for them to do anything funny. The "low level" guys are mostly playing for peanuts, similar to what we see in pro pool. The down side for them is that in all likelihood their pro tennis careers are over. Some of these young guys had a chance to move up the food chain, but that's all over for them now.

It will be interesting to see what is said about it in tennis circles and what commentators like John McEnroe have to say. Mac is typically very outspoken. Just wondering if he will clam up here.

I have to wonder at the credulity of people who bet enough on tennis matches between unknowns to make match fixing worthwhile.

Trust me if you tried to bet $5k on two of these schlubs, the bookie would advise you, there is a $300 limit or similar on that match.

I think his point was after this match fixing/shady characters coming to light shall we expect stereotyping of tennis people in movies the same way we stereotype pool players in them.

a lot of money was involved

The thread kinda went seven different directions so I just let it roll. Been away from the computer a lot too so I wasn't around to kind of steer the thread. My point in posting this was that it was almost an exact parallel of the things happening in pool that people say ruin pool and nobody will give a rat's ass.

There was big money being bet in early round matches of fairly large events when the lower level players were still around. What could a person do if they controlled one-fourth of the field in a pool tournament and they could bet using a dozen internet gambling sites around the world? One huge bet would look funny but if you had a small team of maybe a dozen betters or just a dozen accounts at each site then you could place seemingly random bets all over the place and score nicely. The tournament only has to be big enough to be covered by gambling sites. The nice thing about betting sure things in the early rounds is that you score round after round, not just one match.

The article says over a hundred players involved and hundreds of matches. That ain't chicken feed.
