Problem With Practicing Routine Shots

My two cents...as honestly as I can put em out there....

Your very struggle is what makes this game great. Its the same for us all. From Efren,to me to you.We would all win more if we played better.

That IS the challange.$hit man...that is the game. Not just for you but for us all who love to play. Some learn faster, some get "it" quicker and some will always move slower.

Its what you may come to understand and execute for the first time tommorrow that keeps you moving forward...not what you couldn't do today....(kinda goes to short bus's point).

Desire, practice and a willingness to learn is really all you need. You have all that imo...BUT you do focus on the negative (or well.. whine) when you roll em worse then you think you should.

We all have days like that...you just don't read about em.We know they will pass.Everybody shoots well below speed on occasion.Every now and then we shoot higher then we should.Just as flukey, but lots more fun....
And thats why we play the game.

Its in the the challange, not the outs that make it great.

People keep getting upset with DCP for asking the same questions over and over again, seemingly ignoring or continually "forgetting" the valuable advice he asked for, and for whining about his break etc.

I ask with all sincerity, given the preponderance of evidence, isn't it possible that DCP has a learning disability or similar problems? I don't think it's in the realm of "normal" for anyone to behave like DCP for any other reason.

I used to see a couple of guys come around pool halls all the time. They were both really nice guys, and a little bit on the slow side. They played 6 or 7 days a week, many hours per day, for _YEARS_, and they never improved beyond ball-bangers. It didn't matter if I went to the pool hall during the afternoon or night, they were there, playing the same ol' game.

Come to think of it, there was one major difference. They enjoyed playing, and never complained about their break ;)

this has to be the nicest way ive ever seen someone called slow

Just like in any other sport, some people are better than others. Some people have the aptitude for the game and they learn faster than others.

Some people may never improve beyond being a ball-banger or duffer. But that doesn't mean they're "slow."

Well he did say he was running racks pretty frequently, so either he's exaggerating or he's a pretty decent player. He just complains a lot.

Over in another forum, one player was asking about what he should do to keep from choking on the game ball all the time. A short while later, he posted about running 14 racks (in a row, without a miss). Multiple personalities? Reality disconnect disorder? Dad and son posting from the same account? Or the forum suggestions really, really helped him.

interestinggggggg............whats the deal dcp?

Maybe it would help to start playing pool more often against another person (for free, cheap sets, and/or weekly tournaments). I think that playing against a friend of a similar skill level can be a lot less frustrating. You will see that you're not the only one who misses routine shots, and you'll get a chance to punish someone else for missing them, instead of just hating yourself when you miss them.

Right now I think you may be comparing yourself to pros and the AZ posters who can beat the 9-ball ghost, etc. Just come to terms with where your skill level is at right now. That is your starting point. If you can gradually improve from there over time, and hopefully enjoy the game along the way, that would be a reasonable expectation.

Actually, it's hard for me to get a read on where your skill level is at, because it seems that you set the bar really really high. So while your posts make it sound like you're a C player or so, perhaps you are actually an A player who wants to shoot like a pro. I don't know. Anyway, if you are a C player (unfortunately a subjective term), practicing breaking and running out in 9-ball may not best use of your time (I know that's not the only way you spend it, but it seems to be a significant portion).

Instead of all the time you spend trying to B&RO 9-ball, I would spend at least half of that time playing the N-ball ghost, where N is whatever number it needs to be for you to beat the ghost often. How about playing 20 games of 6-ball ghost every day for the next 6 months and keeping records your win percentage? Then you can look back at the numbers and see if you improved a little over that time. That might give you some satisfaction and there's nothing wrong with that. :)

Routine shots are routine, obviously they are not routine if you miss them. Try this go out tonight and don't think about anything and just shoot the balls in the hole. I think you talk yourself out of everything. I wanna see a video of you playing.

never ran 14 racks in a row. a few weeks ago when i ran 15 racks it took alot of time. main reason is i probably broke for three hours, and only got a decent chance every once in a while. and just so every one will know, i NEVER referred to that as a "FEAT" to be immortalized.

i've said this before, and i guess people find it hard to believe. when all cylinders are firing, the break works early, i dont botch shots/position/runouts early, and i start out good i can play halfway decent. but when things start out bad, bad spreads after the break, no balls down, miss a ball/position, etc, at times i can look like i am a beginner.

its this inconsistency that plagues me. its like in golf, one night in league several years ago i shot 4 under par (32). two days later i shot 43. i told the team captain i got a couple of bad hops, missed a couple of short putts, had a putt hit a spike mark, got down on the world mentally, gave up, etc, etc, and wala, there was that 7 over par 43. and it was legitimate.

so when you say you ran 15 racks you mean over several hours of breaking you ran 15 of them, but nothing in a row

no, wasnt several hours, but wasnt no 45 minutes either. and i dont recall, but it probably wasnt more than two in a row at the most. like i've said MANY times, i am lucky if i get a decent chance at running out every 30-40 breaks, let alone a chance at running a few in a row.

DCP, let's dissect all the negative terminology in your post.

I have never seen someone so consistently negative. Were you beaten s a child? And I really am not kidding, I am asking this seriously. For someone to have such low self esteem as to constantly downgrade oneself, I am thinking bad parenting must come into the equation somewhere.

I repeat, you will never be a good player until you get rid of this tendency to self-marginalize.

I have figured it out.....

DCP is attempting an internet hustle! He is actually an incognito world beater just waiting to reel someone in off the .com world for a big score

Seriously now DCP meditate on this question and give us all an answer and this question is not in any way meant to be derogetory (sp).

"Why do you play this game?"

I bet he wishes he had one of these right now. He could go back and start posting all over again. :D:D:D

I have a problem with practicing my routine shots too. Everytime I have a chance to do this and finally get into it I either get a phone call or a text message from this girl I know who is kinda sexy who wants me to come down to her house and lay around in bed with her. So I go.
