problems with super pro tips

Has anyone had any problems with the super pro tips layers peeling apart after a couple weeks play?

Out of the 20 or 30 I've installed only 2 have delaminated on me and they were for my personal cues. One was my fault I let my cue fall and the impact slapped the tip on the floor. Just install another super pro on your cue if you like how they play. I still use them because they don't require constant grooming like other tips. Hope this helps.

It is possible that the tip itself was the problem, but with those tips it should only happen on very rare occasion. I too have only had one or 2 do that, one easily came apart while I was crowning It, and the other after a short period of play. Keep in mind i can't even count how many I have installed with no problems at all though. They have been used for play also, but I install most for breaking, and they usually hold up great. From my experiences It doesn't seem to be a batch issue when It happens either, just the occasional individual tip, the rest of the batch were always fine.

If your having more of these problems then just the one, then I would ask the same questions as Jerry did. But if the method of trimming and shaping were the underlining cause, then I would expect that It would be happening with some other brands of laminated tips as well. Not sure how many tips You install, or what your using to do the work with, and I haven't used hand tools to shape and trim in many, many years, but if by some chance that is what Your using, then I can say from what I remember of the many different type hand tools that were available back then is that they were hit and miss, and most of them could be real hard on laminated tips, and easily cause de-lamination when not carefully used. some tools would cause It despite best efforts to avoid It.

Ive had 3 out of about 100 come apart!all 3 were put on in the same week and delaminated in the same week about a month later

I bought 50 of them I think about a year ago. I installed them at tournaments, and on 3 room's house cues. I probably installed 30 of them. At least HALF came back for delaminations within the following few months.

I posted about this elsewhere, and the general thought was I had a bad batch of tips.

That said, in this business, your reputation is everything. When something goes wrong, its the repairman's fault, not the tip manufacturer. I installed new tips (not super pros) for all my customers, and will NEVER put a super pro on again!

Let me say I'm an experienced repair man of close to 10 years now. I use a utility knife blade to sheer the tips to the correct diameter, and to shape the front of the tip.

Your milage may vary, but I'll 1000% never touch one of these tips again.

I have a lathe and use a razor blade to trim the edges and to shape it. I have experience instaling tips but only do it for myself right now. I bought a box off of here and ive put on about 5 so far just for my own shooting stick and the first 2 might have lasted a week, the layers seem to come unglued after a week or two. Heres where I figured it to be the tip because someone else from my area had one put on from another person and his did the same exact thing, the tip came off but not at the ferrule but the layers.

Even though My experiences with these particular tips have been different then it may be for someone else, I can see where any tip having this issue could be related to a bad batch. I've installed too many tips in general to think any different, and I have had My share of bad boxes of tips that had to be tossed out. I'm not just speaking of laminated tips either.

I mostly only install them for break cues these days, so the numbers are quite a bit less then the other brands of tips I've installed, but Over the last 5 years, I've probably installed about 100 super pros. Of those, one was a lot of 50 tips that I picked up, and the other was a lot of 100 that I bought from another cue maker & repair guy. I have about 30- 50 left so that's where I'm getting the numbers that I've installed from. It may be a few less, because some tips I still toss for other reasons other then de lamination issues. Of Those 2 batches I've only had the couple of issues that I mentioned in My first post, but I felt It important that I mention this because I've basically just been working out of the 2 batches that I mentioned for the last few years, and It's possible that I just had 2 good batches.

It doesn't so much matter how many tips You have installed, as long as You feel secure in the methods that you used to install the tip has nothing to do with the problem. You would most likely know If you installed other brands of laminated tips and were having the same issues with them. IMO if the super pro is good, then It should not be much harder to install then most others, and should hold up as well if not better. From My experiences, the ones I've installed trim even easier then some other brands. It's still possible that they could be bad regardless of my experiences with them is all I am saying.

In general, I'm thinking back in the last 5 to 10 years here with these comments, but the harder I think about It back in the late 90's I may have had a few more issues with them. Back then I generally bought them in much smaller quantity though.

God Luck with It

I had about 4 out of 20 come apart but now i'm burnishing the sides with a thin coat of cyano and no problems at all.I have 2 boxes from 2 different places and can visually see that they're not exactly the same.
