Starting in January, Corey Deuel will be helping teach the billiards classes and work will the billiard club at the University of Akron. He is also in talks with helping out at Kent State University as well.

I've never perceived Corey as arrogant. He loves the game and never hesitates to talk to a fan or sign an autograph. I think this is something that he is going to be great at and I wish him the best.Donovan said:

Here is a quote from Ralf Soquet, who is as nice as they come and hardly ever says a bad word about anyone. The reporter knew Deuel was giving Ralf a tough time and sharking him during their match. So they asked Ralf what he thinks of Deuel. After he hesitated a few time trying to think of something nice to say, he gave up and said, "He's an A**hole." I was shocked that you could get Ralf to even say that. I did laugh like crazy though.
Another time, I think he was playing Mika. Deuel was asked by Mika if he could move his chair back a little so he could have some more room to shoot. Deuel said, "No," and just stared at him like, what are you gonna do about it.

I think I saw that match on TV. To Corey's defense, that was the tightest quarters I've seen at a TV event. They had the players boxed in so that there was only about 7 feet of room between the table and the stands. It seems there's typically at least 15 feet from all edges.

Kudos to Corey. We shouldn't even care about his motives/remuneration. Its GOOD FOR THE GAME. In my opinion the death of big time pool was at least hastened by the reluctance of the great players to share their knowledge and spread their knowledge.
We should all thank people like Jerry Briesath, Mark Wilson, RandyG, etc. who are willing to take the time to pass on the inside knowledge of the game, and willing to take the time to learn how to teach the game.
I was at the local billiard hall last week when a father brought in his son (probably about 10-12 years old) to play some pool. At the next table was Jeanette Lee, playing a straight pool league match. When she was done, she went over to the little boy (who she has never seen before), unsolicited, and spent about a half hour showing him some basics, then playing a game or two with him. This was an example of going that extra step (the Arnold Palmer philosophy) that is very good for the game. There was quite an audience, but the little boy will never forget it; and I just wish I saw more professionals behaving in this manner.

He is also VOLUNTEERING his time to teach these kids, when he could be getting paid to give these lessons.
The word aloof came to mind, when I thought of what he has been like, when I have seen him. I think shy, might be a better description, of what I perceived. Of the times that I have seen him, he never seemed rude or arrogant.The Baby's Arm said:

Well, maybe I'm wrong. I certainly don't know him personally. Maybe his attitude in those two instances were not representative of who he is. I'm all for the better of the game, and his volunteering his time is certainly commendable.
I guess like other people from the US, I hate seeing how we as a country look when our players use disrespect to players from other nations. I know this can go both ways, and it does, but it all really gets old having to see these lines drawn so often.

I think to be a world-class player, you have to have extraordinary confidence, which sometimes can be perceived as arrogance. My only personal encounter with Corey he was real polite and the times I've seen him in poolrooms or tournements, he always handled himself pretty well. There are plenty of total jerks in the pro ranks to hammer, but IMO Corey ain't one of em.

wouldn't think it'd be completely unrealistic, it must be hard to stay motivated to perform at the elite level for as many years as he has, having achieved all that he has. Maybe he's looking for an out. More power to him either way.

I did watch Corey closely during tournaments and he is very proud of his skills. Sometimes ability to be very good in something can make you an arogant person if you don't know how to control it.
