I am far from being a promoter, so don’t know if this would or wouldn’t fly. Open Invitational to me would mean invite 16 players, 12 pros and a mixture of 4 amateurs that are up and coming young guns, road players and top amateur players. Players e-mail their “ I want to play stats” to the promoter and he/she picks a 16 player field out of the responses. No player is in automatic. This will help with the better behave if you want to get an invite part of it. It’s up to the promoter to pick the ones out of the e-mails that he/she will work with and what they think will sell to the PPV and live gate and hopefully TV at some point. The production studio is right there to produce for TV.

I believe all tournaments should be held in one venue. Now this next part might be wrong, but I think a venue like the TAR or Bonus Ball studio with two 9’ or 10’ tables with 50 padded bleacher seats on one wall or two would work. Again, I don’t know the room needed and the amount of tables needed.

$10,000 added from 1 to 5 sponsors…promoter keeps anything over 10k

I like your efforts...

High stake invitational tournaments is not the way to go if pool is to get of the rut it has dig for itself.

This will only become elitism which will not work in the infancy of any new grand plan.
INCLUSIVE is a word for the future of pool at any level :thumbup:

JohnnyT, You have a lot of money missing here. I do love your eagerness to come up with an idea that may be for the betterment of the sport/game. You are one of the good guys that truly want the industry to do well. So having said that please do not take offence to what I have to say.

There are a few things that you have not accounted for.
1) Rental of the space.
2) expenses and pay for the TD.
3) Marketing costs

To name a few. Also this would take at least a couple of months to put together and although you say any sponsorship over $10k the promoter can keep you probably don't know how hard it is to get $10k in sponsorship even if its split 5 ways. Still $2k each is not easy to get and with the limited exposure very tough.

Sorry, but it all boils down to money and exposure. On the same note players who may enter would have to feel lie they had a VERY good chance of winning and so the field would be full of Champions. $2k entry to play against all the other World greats is working yourself against the odds as we know they can all bat each other on any given day but some have better chance than others so I think it would not be easy to get them to put up $2k of their own $$ and the up an coming players am guessing would maybe do I for experience only if they even could afford t waste $2k.

That's my view of it, not saying it could not be done but certainly a long shot without an angel investor/sponsor. I wish it was easy we would have a great chance at a sport that could grow,
 
Thank you Mark for your feedback above, and thank you for the kind words. As I said I'm not a promoter and knew I might have left out a few things. The big one is the sponsorship money being that hard to get, and if that's the case I wasted my time on this. As far as marketing, I don't see any radio, tv spots, printed flyers sent out to all poolrooms, and newspaper ads now. All I ever see is free marketing on the internet. As far as venue goes I was thinking about renting the Bonus Ball studio or the TAR studio. But again, if the kind of sponsorship needed can't be got, this format and most others are dead in the water anyhow. Pro pool will continue it's slide down the drain and be just a memory in the USA. Your right!
Pool needs to stop looking for a quick fix. For success to happen a long-term plan needs to be put in place that's enticing for ALL pool players to participate, not just the chosen few for whom - not too man could afford to lose the type of money mentioned.

I agree with the above. Johnnyt - your heart is in the right place which is a strong blessing for our game :thumb up:

SBE & BCAPL have nearly got it completely right - only needs better promotion on both accounts with clear objectives and pool would be bouncing again!

Bare in mind that SBE & BCAPL are already going on while the Pro events are on and are money makers. Allen and Mark probably are doing it for the sport and since they have a built in area that goes along with what they already have going on it makes it much easier to do. PLEASE remember when I say easier that does not mean that it is a hanger either still a lot of time effort and $$$ go into them. Jay H, seems to be able to make the BIGFOOT work but we also have to remember that although he isn't out there on the scene the way he once was he is still a great promoter and TD. I have no clue of his biz and where the $$ comes from but he gets it done. Jay loves the game and it may be his own $$.

In reply to this thread my answers do not really concern the growth of pro pool. My reason is simple.
Whatever is good for pool - in the short and long term is good for pro pool.
So much effort has been placed on the pro game for decades with poor results...
E.G. - BMX didn't start with a pro circuit - it was simply individuals, mainly children who just wanted to compete. One you have competitors, you have a scene - once you have a scene you have a chance to build an audience. An audience changes EVERYTHING!!!!!
Sometimes the path isn't straight.

Absolutely right. The problem is that it isn't in the league-leadership's (LOs, room owners, etc.) interest for league players to spend time watching professional pool (time spent watching is time not spent in the pool hall). It would help a lot if we could reconcile the interests of professional and amateur pool.

we'd rather be PLAYING, than watching.
we'd rather be WATCHING ON SITE, than stream.
as long as we can AFFORD the time & $$$.

we are limited w/ taking my 13yr old shooting, because minors are not allowed >8PM. and he gets home from school @ 5-6PM. a Juniors League couldn't exist here.
 
Pool is a Poor Spectator Sport

There is a AZ member who has a quote that sums up Pool as a spectator sport I wish I could remember his name

" Everyone Loves to Fish , but very few people would be willing to pay to watch someone else fish"

Outside of Pool Players there is not alot of interest in watching pool as a spectator . The general public who know little about the game, do not understand the nuances and strategy involved in pro pool , Same for chess ( ever set down and watch a chess match)

Until there is a senario that makes pool more watchable and draws a wider audience there will be very few TV sports Channles willing to air it , with no audience there will be no sponsers willing to put up sponsership money as there will be no advertizing return on thier investment.

I think It needs to go back to the grass roots level , Room Owners , and TDs growing it from the ground up . You want a Long term Viable Pro Tour. You have to get people back in the pool rooms , bring in new blood and get the younger players interested and that is a tough row to hoe

Good post BW! I'm confident a # of new efforts are in place to provide newcoming players opportunity.

I'd like to add another suggestion to growing pool. We all fawn over an idol. Look at what Tiger did (pre-scandal) to "the #'s". When Tiger skipped a tour stop, #'s dropped huge. F'g massive needle drop.

It wouldn't hurt if a young Arnold Palmer-esque was taken into the pool spotlight. Arnie moved the needle an insane amount and elevated the integrity... Even if he hit on my woman too. ;) I offered her to him after the round, with a wink, and he blushed. Winnie is still his gal.
