Hit the cue ball in the right place. That's about 70% of its total height. If you do a lot of pump-handle with your stroke, it's more difficult to hit accurately for follow, but it can be done. Try to come straight through. To get a lot of spin, you will need to hit it hard. If you want more dramatic action, make sure the cue ball is clean and maybe wax it a little.

You cannot put an excess amount of follow spin on the cue ball much to my chagrin all you can do is make the cue ball roll with the table. Hit the cue ball with a level cue with the bottom of the cue tip above 1.62 inches (2/5's above center or higher) with a rounded tip with chalk. The cue ball will be naturally rolling hit an abject ball fairly full, most of the inertia of the cue balls mass will be absorbed by the object ball and the cue ball will stop. The stored rotational energy in the cue ball will be released after a short amount of sit and spin time and the cue ball will jet forward.

Most people never strike the cue ball that high and the cue ball is actually sliding and slightly rolling when it leaves the tip. Notice a real strong player when they want to good follow action, they do not work up a super stroke they get level and get the tip up high on the cue ball. Learn to hit the cue ball as stated above and the faster you can hit the cue ball and get it naturally rolling the more of an effect you can demonstrate hitting something and take off the forward momentum and allowing the rotation energy to take effect is the key to all of the cool follow shots you see.

It would appear after reviewing multiple youtube videos and Dr Dave's super video site that the excess forward spin is not really possible. Slight overspin can perhaps be created but will be dissipated almost immediately after the cue ball moves forward. Of course I am taking about clean balls and cloth not sure the effects that are possible with silicone spray or other materials on the balls and cloth.

I know what you're asking for. Your follow shot isn't very impressive and you want to get action on the cueball like you see so many others doing.

Keep your cue as level as you can. Start of easy with one tip above center, strike it firm and follow straight through the ball. You'll get more of the desired effect if you don't let your tip drop while striking through the ball. Stroke it as straight, and as level, as you can. It's going to feel weird going through like that because the natural tendency is to let the tip dip down while following through, that's just the way our bodies are made. Anyway, it'll feel weird but once you get comfortable with it then you can try a little higher. Don't get too high though as you'll actually be working against what you're trying to do....and increasing your chances of miscuing.

Stroke the ball level as possible depending upon the cue ball location on the table. Hit the cue ball somewhere between 1/2 and 1 tip above the cue balls center and follow through, that is about all it takes.

Sometimes I see guys hitting too low for follow. They get some spin but not really enough. Keep in mind that its the bottom part of your tip that makes contact. Try to raise your bridge hand even with where you want to hit the cue ball(think level here). To make sure youre aiming center, square up to the top of the ball. Go as high as you can on the ball until you miscue. That way you can feel whats really too high(for you).
