Proposed TAR matchup: SVB vs. C.J.

Six great players all meeting up at the same time for a match would be awesome.

I would definitely pay to watch that. The matches could be recorded and sold. I would even buy the DVD to add to my collection of great matches of all time.

Edit: I wanted to add that it would be cool if all of the players were mic'd up. I think "King of the hill" would be a better and more entertaining format.

Great post.

First off, to ask me to play Shane out of the gate is not going to happen, and for several reasons. There is always an order of players you should play in any given town, state, country or world, and Shane would not be first on that list.

I can play Keith McCready, Earl, Sigel, Efren, Bustemante, Morris, Deuel, Moore, Shuff, Dalton, Archer, etc. before Shane. That's really common sense, and would give me some much needed competition before playing the "best player in the world". My game is technically sound, however, I very rarely get to compete and when I do it's once ever 6 months to a year. The last year I've sacrificed my playing for teaching. I find it difficult to do both at a "world class level," so teaching the TOI and other advanced techniques is more rewarding and satisfying for me right now.

The only time I went to the Derby {5 or 6 years ago} I tried to gamble with anyone there, and Shane played me 9 Ball for 300 a game and we had 200 on the side. He got 8 games winner, I got even and he quit to play Gabe Owens. I'm not sure why he quit and I'm not saying I would have beat him from that point, but I will say it wasn't looking very positive for him, and I was going to be very tough from that point on. I'm typically "slow out of the gate," and I'm more inclined to play 15 ahead sets with no "time limit".

Shane has a lot of confidence and momentum right now and, as the Mosconi Cup Captain last year I would have preferred no player more than him playing that final match (if it would have come to that) against Darren Appleton. Ever era has some dominant players and Shane is certainly one for this one. I would say in Las Vegas on that table he's unbeatable now.

I have a lot of respect for Shane and his game, especially his 10 Ball break. 9 Ball would be the game we will play when that time comes. Roll Out rules are my forte and I will play anyone in the united states that game Johnny suggested where you roll out after the break. Johnny and I have played many times and I will also decline playing him until I've played a few other matches.

We're working on getting matches televised here in Dallas and that appeals to me more than doing streaming video, we've done 8 televised matches here in Dallas and it's not that difficult for us to put on because of past history with Fox/Prime Sports.

We also worked with the WPBA and ESPN to do those 70 shows in the mid 90s, so at some point I will approach then with a "deal they can't refuse," however, that will be at least a year away. I am involved with a group here in DFW that love pool and want to see it televised, so the financial end should be covered, it's just a matter of content.

We also have a match played here that I will download and show sometime soon with Earl Strickland and myself playing in the Million Dollar Challenge with Jimmy "Pretty Boy Floyd" doing the commentary. Pool's getting exciting for me again and I thank all at AZBIILLIARDS and the Forum for your questions, comments and "friendly" banter. 'The Game is the Teacher'

For a professional player one of the toughest things is to describe what we're doing

CJ, I have been reading some of your posts but I don't think I have ever read anything that might indicate your abilities now. How are you hittin' em?

Of course I have seen video of you playing a long time ago and you were great. It would be so amazing and nice if you can still compete at the top again.

Regards

My game stays at about 90%, and the other 10% comes through competition. The challenge these days is finding tournaments that are really worth going to. I'm not excited about non televised events, then when they only pay the top 4 or 5 more than their expenses, it's undesirable. If I can't play every weekend I'd rather do something more constructive by giving lessons, seminars or filming videos that may make an impact on thousands of present and/or future players.

I'm getting ready to do something that is "unprecedented," in pool thus far, and yes it requires me to play a "World Class Speed", with a "catch". This is to beat the 15 ball ghost and describe what I'm doing on each shot. This is one of the toughest things attempted, and I've been practicing by doing it in front of small groups of people. I will be ready in two weeks to film it.

This is very difficult, however, possibly the most informative thing I can do for players that really want to know how we "think" ourselves through the rack, especially with the difficulty of running all 15 balls in order.

Because of my TOI Technique I can show and tell viewers exactly how much I'm going INSIDE from center to create every shot, my position zone, and my speed will stay relatively consistent. I will show what I mean exactly when I say you can make every shot seem the same. This I will do with anyone on earth, yes, even Shane.

For a professional player one of the toughest things is to describe what we're doing as we do it. This requires utilizing both the "left brain," and the "right brain," sometimes back and forth. This will give many players a severe "head ache" after a few racks. 'The Game is the Teacher'

How about an old schoolers' ring game? Anybody could stream it if it's in Dallas...TAR, InsidePool, OTS, whoever. Throw Sigel into that mix, too. If not a ring game, maybe a king of the hill, winner keeps playing, AccuStats determines the winner. Somebody recently streamed a ring game with a bunch of shortstops and one old salt of a roadplayer (70+ years old, he got second). They used poker chips to keep score, once you were out, you were done...winner take all. It was VERY entertaining, even though I'd never heard of any of the players. Put in Howard, Sigel, CJ, Earl, Efren, McCready, Hopkins, Varner, Archer and anyone else that won a title in the 90s or earlier and I think you have a big time winner. Even Buddy, if he's up to it. Or break it up into smaller ring games played over a series.

Now your talking. Or a 8 man tourny with CJ, Howard, Varner, Sigel, Mcready, Rempe, Buddy, and Hopkins.

What size table and pockets? diamond or goldcrown? Anyone who can beat the 15 ball ghost in a race or ahead set will do something I have never seen. Your right about the tournys. You can spend 2,000 easy and its like betting even money you place second or better in most cases.

I play it in practice by taking one ball off the table after the break.

The 15 ball ghost is extremely difficult because there are many times a ball tied up that just won't go in and can't be broken out. I play it in practice by taking one ball off the table after the break. This seems to be the highest speed someone can expect to play in rotation games.

This will be the one ball or any other ball, and it's strategic because you must understand at a glance how the table will be run out for this ball to be a factor.

I prefer Gold Crowns, the rails produce more natural angles and 4.25 inch pockets seem to be the ideal size, not too big and not too small.
