Proud Moment at Iowa State VNEA Tourney

I just wanted to share a proud moment I had this last weekend and the Iowa VNEA State tournament. I had my best year ever in the singles events, finishing 28th out of 609 in the open 8-ball division, and making the money for the first time ever in 9-ball, but what I my team did was what truly put a smile on my face.

I was a last minute add and had never really played with these guys in a team setting. We had a bye our first round, but turned right around and lost the second pretty badly. The way the tourney is set up, they only play the winners bracket out the first night so we all went our separate ways a little dejected.

We regrouped at noon Saturday ready to get some wins, and win we did. We played though the whole day, heading home at 3:00am (with the time change) with a match to play at 8am Sunday morning. 3 hours of sleep later and we were back at it, and at 4:00pm we were playing the finals against a tough team from Omaha. This was our 15th match and we were out of steam, but we put up a good showing, losing by 6 points. It was the first time that I have ever gotten anywhere near that far, and I am so proud of my teammates. Funny thing was, because we would have had to double dip our opponents it didn't occur to me that we were playing in the finals, it struck me on the way to get dinner afterwards. It was a grueling weekend, but man what a ride!

Those team events can be a blast. Your post reminds me of my first team event that wrote about years ago. Coming from the losers side is definitely harder but it's more fun if you ask me.

Congrats on the great play.

Congratulations! That's what makes pool worthwhile -- playing great and enjoying the ride.

Great job. I remember having good finishes in state just like you. Top 20, then top 13, etc. Then once 2nd.....arrrrggg! But finally a state championship and then another and another. Stay strong and believe in yourself. Reflect on what you did this weekend and more good is to come your way.

Congrats!

That's impressive. In the national NCAA wrestling tournament they refer to those matches at end on the one loss side as the blood rounds. The guys who battle back through the blood rounds and get a medal get a lot of respect.
