Well, now you have got us all curious....

Well, I will give you an example then, Lodini.

In the 1970s, I earned $15,000 a year as a secretary in a legal office.

Today, I would earn anywhere from $50,000 to $75,000 as a legal secretary.

Hope that helps to explain my point.

MANY years ago, Budweiser was going to sponsor a national tour. From what I was told, "Don Mackey stunk it all up." Greediness raised its ugly head, and Budweiser pulled out, much like Hilton Hotels did several years ago.

Hilton Hotels was going to sponsor a national tour, and after the second event, they saw the writing on the wall, cancelled everything, the whole tour they had envisioned.

Of course, if pool's own culture has not respect for professional players, why would non-pool-related sponsors want to invest in this so-called "sport"?

JAM

Hilton is where they went wrong... should have been Holiday Inn Express! I can see the commercials now... Some average Joe running racks on Earl in the finals... post tourny interivew... Where did you learn to play like that! Answer: I am not a pro... I just stayed a a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Here is another example of pool ignorance.

I can guarantee to the readers of this thread that whatever job title Lodino holds today in the year 2008, the salary for the same job was probably 75 percent less in 1970.

Pool payouts today are the same in 2008 as they were in 1970, 1980, and 1990. Every other industry, career, and job has enjoyed a cost-of-living increase.

I rest my case. :)

JAM

lmao, what case?
All I've heard is that poolplayers should be paid for their skill sets. That's fine to think that but do you understand why that isn't the case? People in the US as a whole do not care about pool. It doesn't matter that you, me, or anyone else on AZ Billiards spends thousands of dollars on pool. It's simple Economics, If there is no demand for something then the price of the supply (pool players in this example) can be had for cheap. It shows that basically the demand for professional pool has not increased over the past few decades.

This is a serious question. Why should pool players make more than fry cooks or mechanics? What do they do that makes them worth more than those people? My dad was a mechanic for 30 years and worked his ass off to provide for me and my brother and save enough money to ultmately buy some businesses. He provided services that people needed and would pay for. What service does a pool player provide other than to entertain? Wait, you'll bring in the "dance monkey, dance" line again when it is the fans that pay the players' prize money. You don't even see that if their weren't any fans that the players would have NO money.

Instead of berrating everyone on here for just stating the truth you should try to do something about it if it really means something to you. Call Mark Griffin and see if you can help him, get Keith to do some appearances on behalf of the players. There are a lot of things that you could do instead of saying that everyone is against professional players, which couldn't be further from the truth.

Point understood. I was just trying to metaphorically compare it to supply and demand. And Legal Secretaries (though these days, I believe it would be more like Legal Assistant, as the word "secretary" doesn't get heard too often) are still high in demand.

I'm sorry... I thought everyone knew already that I work in professional sports doing sponsorship/promotions/marketing. I wasn't trying to be aloof! :p ;)

Ask Buddy Hall, Earl Strickland, and Nick Varner this question next time you happen to run into them. I am sure they could answer it much better than I.

Here's where you don't know a damn thing about me and/or Keith or what we have done for pool. I'd detail it out here on this thread, but quite frankly, you are not worth it. Ask around sometime to those in the know, and maybe you'll find out what I'm all about.

And don't say I'm berrating anyone just because it suits your need to disagree with me on this thread. I am stating my opinion as politely as I can.

Here in D.C., legal secretaries are making anywhere from 50- to 75K. Believe me, they still are quite popular in my area. One out of every 100 Washingtonians is an attorney, and attorneys cannot function without good secretaries. And they also get benefits with that salary.

They are quite popular in every area, I am sure. That's my point. High demand=higher salaries. Almost makes me wish I had the skill set to be a Legal Secretary;)

It really doesn't matter what Buddy, Earl, or Nick think because they aren't on here complaining about the fact that pool players don't make enough money.

As for me being a fan, ask all the people that came into my pool room and played for free, ask all the players that I loaned money to and never got it back, ask TAR and all the other recent ventures what kind of fan I am. Just because I don't think that the world owes pool players a living just because they can draw a ball doesn't mean that I'm not a fan and haven't spent thousands on the sport. As I've said before, I respect your opinions but you don't respect the opinions of others that differ from you.

Since this is what you do for a living, what can or should be done to light the fire under pocket billiards? They got poker mainstream...

Thank the good Lord, they will never have to read your ignorant words on this forum about their profession and the lack of respect you have for them as champions.

You don't respect my opinion one iota. If you did, you wouldn't be playing these forum games.

You should have never told me on LIVE CHAT the words you did in front of my pool friends. I haven't forgotten them. It revealed your true colors, and as far as what you've done for pool, I don't buy it.

As far as what I've done for pool, you don't deserve to know because I don't consider you a true fan of the game.

JAM,
I have know Vette for a long time. When I first met him, he was part owner of a poolroom that held many tournies here in the Southeast. Pros and amateurs all attended. He does supoort local players and goes to tournies to watch whenever possible and has supported other entities such as TAR on a regular basis. Im in no way trying to attack you, but this quote is a bit out of line. JMO.

Since we are waaaay off prize money here. What is the one thing you would change about pool (to help bring in money/promote pool). Example: Change the stereotype of drunks, smokers and gamblers play pool.

I like the coaching tips that pro poker players do during games and example hands during commercials. Maybe some aiming practices, stance etc by current top pro's during TV broadcasting would help build viewer interest.

Of course, you are going to step up for him as you are friends. I believe the two of you celebrated your birthday recently together, if memory serves me right.

If he told your wife or girlfriend what he told me in LIVE CHAT, you may not feel the same way about him.

I read the words he states about professional players, and I come away with quite a different opinion about him, Southpaw.

Thanks for your opinion about your friend. :)

playing what forum games JAM? I've been getting 5-6 pm's a day telling me that you were following me from thread to thread taking cheap shots at me. YOU are the one that instigates every argument you get in.

I don't care whether you think I'm a fan or not. I've done more for pool and pool players than you can or will ever know. Wow, you've gone on the tourney trail with Keith and have some stories. Way to go.

And you are right, I don't care about your opinions as you don't give anyone on here respect for theirs. You are as one sided as I've ever seen. You spend the majority of your time on here arguing with people and then telling them that they are trolls and idiots when YOU started it. Somehow you have it in your mind that being the girlfriend of a former pool champion makes your opinions right and others' wrong. Don't bother replying as you are going back to where you belong, IGNORE.

As far as the drunks, none of them drink anymore at tournaments. Most times, you'll see them with a bottle of water by their side when in tournament play.

As far as the smokers, the majority of pool rooms and tournament venues are smoke-free.

As far as the gamblers, this wouldn't hold up very well as the Derby City Classic in Louisville. In fact, if you took away the gambling, the DCC might turn into a ghost town! :D
