Part of an interview in Macleans. Matthew Syed, Times reporter and Britain’s number one table-tennis player argues that natural ability has very little to do with high achievement.

A: If you look at the scientific evidence, where you end up in a field bears no relation whatsoever to you initial endowment and is created by the quality and quantity of your practice. Psychologist Anders Ericsson has shown that the difference between extraordinary performers and everyone else is that they practice more.

Q: Most of us put in a lot of practice at something. Why aren’t we super-achievers?

A: It has to be purposeful practice with the right level of focus, and you have to be extending you limitations and receiving good training with rigorous feedback, you’re not going to improve. I’ve driven for thousands of hours but I’m not a world–class driver, because when I drive, I’m listening to the radio and wondering what to have for dinner. But when I play table tennis, I’m pushing myself, always, just beyond my limits. That’s not particularly comfortable. I’m concentrating as hard as I can; I have a camera trained on me so I can get feedback by watching the video later; I’ve got the best coach in the world watching – all that means that you just keep getting better and better. Ericsson pointed out that the most amazing thing about expertise is the capacity of “ordinary” people to just keep improving with practice.

Q: But doesn’t the athlete who starts out with more natural ability which is at least partially genetically determined, have a distinct advantage?

A: Genes are relevant to initial ability. You can see, for example, that some kids are better than others when they first pick up a ball. But the evidence shows that over many thousands of hours, that initial disparity just doesn’t matter. What really alerted me to a fundamental problem with the idea that success is all about natural ability is that I grew up on Silverdale Road in Reading, about as anonymous a road as you can imaging, and yet in the early 1980s that one tiny street contained more of the top table tennis players than the rest of the nation combined. There was no genetic mutation that occurred only for people living on Silverdale Road. We just had access to better opportunities – most importantly, the opportunity to practice at a facility that was open around the clock and receive very advanced training from the best coach in the country, who taught at our local primary school. Our genetic inheritance didn’t matter, because after a number of years, all of us who lived on that road found ourselves to be very new people with brains and bodies sculpted by the training and practice.

Q: You say that there’s no such thing as a child prodigy, there are just parents who coach their children to start practicing earlier and harder. Why do some parent succeed while others fail?

A: If there’s some level of coercion, if a child is doing the work or the sport because he’ll be disciplined by his parents if he doesn’t, the amount he’ll improve is severely compromised and there is greater risk of burning out. Good coaching is about encouraging enjoyment and getting the young person to internalize the motivation. Tiger Woods said, “My dad never asked me to play golf. I asked him.”

Q: You write about Laszlo Plogar, a Hungarian educational psychologist who set out in the 1970s to prove that any child could become world-class at something. He chose chess because success could be measured objectively, and his three daughters became the best female players in history. How did he get them to internalize motivation?

A: Polgar made chess playful, jovial, and he used little tactics to build a level of excitement and interest. For instance, at the beginning he would say, ‘No, no, you’re not allowed to play yet.” By the time they were teenagers and winning international tournaments, the girls were fascinated by chess and wanted to practice. They didn’t need to be pushed.

Q: How important is positive feedback?

A: The type of positive feedback is crucial. If you praise kids for talent, for how skilled they are, they avoid challenges because they know that if they fail they’re going to lose that label. You want to encourage and praise them for effort, for working hard. The distinction is between what Carol Dweck, A Stanford psychologist who has done groundbreaking work in this area, calls a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. If you have a fixed mindset, you believe that talent is what leads to success, and you are likely to give up if you fail early on because that will be regarded as evidence that you lack the necessary talent. But if you believe that success revolves around hard work and practice, failure is not going to deter you at all. It’s going to tell you that you need to practice harder. With a growth mindset, you’re more likely to reach excellence, because failure is an inevitable part of reaching excellence.

How genius gets that way

During the 1960s and 70s I worked with John Eccles (Nobel Laureate in Neurophysiology, 1957) and found studies of these people interesting. Eccles was a super genius and referred to as one of the 100 most important people of the 20th century. He did many things in life and his knowledge was far reaching. At first, like many people, I did not like this person who truly had all the answers and skills we all seek. Later I came to appreciate one of the most stimulating men I have ever met.

During the late 60s or early 70s a lady did a study of Nobel Prize winners and found that a very higher percentage of them had studied with prior winners of the Nobel Prize. Eccles was from Australia where he excelled in academics. I remember that he told me that he (as a student) was asked to teach his high school chemistry class when his teacher fell sick.

Eccles was from a good family who nurtured his academic abilities. Later he won a scholarship to study at Oxford England with Charles Sherrington (a prior Nobel winner). Following in Sherrington’s footsteps on his return to Australia in young adult hood Eccles conducted research in the area he learned from Sherrington and 30 years later he too won the prize for work in the same area. Apparently Eccles' story is not unique.

It would seem that there are often (not always) two or three factors at work. First you have a gifted individual who lives under nurturing circumstances. Second that person is guided or mentored by an outstanding individual. Later the student benefits from the talent and teaching.

There was some discussion of people who cite pros but no names and I tend to agree with the comments that state “If it isn’t public it did not happen.” And so I have named names.

Outstanding success in any field is a matter of many factors coming together. This is true for most any outcome that did not have an over riding factor (such as your Dad being Bill Gates). How did you become good at your profession? If you are honest, I think you will agree that there is no one single thing that made you the person you are today. The same can be said for the pro pool players.

I am amazed at the notion fostered by so many people that mankind has evolved on a straight line basis. These people are the nurture crowd. I believe their egos are such that they cannot, or will not, except the idea of anyone being superior to them by a genetic happenstance. If you weren't pushed to excell they cry, or wasn't given the oppurtunity to excell, or made to practice a skill, then you were disadvantaged. End of story. Well, poppycock I say!
Just remember that for every sour grapes psychologist you find, such as the one above, who expouse the nurture theory there will be that many, or more, who support the nature side.
Afterall, it doesn't really matter if it's One Pocket or quantum physics, the cream will still rise to the top.
 
Working in a children’s reformatory I often gave IQ test to incoming boys and girls. Interestingly the standard Wechsler IQ test contains subsections that assess natural ability (often referred to as G) as well as the results of education (nurturing for lack of a better word).
It is classic and well accepted, that most delinquent boys have a normal (or slightly higher) G scores than their assessed IQ. In general delinquents have a 100 - 110 IQ with regard to natural ability and about 85 – 90 IQ in the more traditional areas. This is not opinion it is a common finding.

I have tested kids with a gifted G score over 150 and a regular IQ of 90 (or less). These kids have something like a beat up Corvette engine under the hood. The machine looks like hell, can’t speak English very well, and quit learning arithmetic in 5th grade. Yet when these same children are “nurtured” they can complete high school requirements in six months. Actually this is no big deal for these kids, who in the right environment go on to accomplish things that most of us are not capable of.

The bottom line, for me, is that the gifted individual can be suppressed and his learning retarded by poor circumstances.

I knew one person personally who stuttered and was thought to be retarded throughout his school years while he lived in public orphanages and similar “unloving” places. The boy would not talk (because he stuttered) and in general acted out in many ways that we today would consider mischievous. At 17 he joined the service, later, on his own, he want to college, then graduate school and became a well known scientist. He probably would have done even more if he had had a better childhood.

Natural ability and nurturance are both important and one can, at times, have a severe impact on the other. However, in general, and this boy is a case in point, natural talent will out in the end – it just takes longer with some reduction in accomplishments.

One comment to add. A man named Terman conducted a study of the brightest people he could find. He followed them thoughout their lives and when in their 70s he asked what it was all about, what was important and how should one live their life?

I don’t remember the figure exactly but somewhere in the 90% range those remaining in the study said that the single most important thing in one’s life is their family. If you are on good terms with your family (and those who nurture you) you can do anything. Apparently, the people of their generation who wrote more books, made more money and in general were at the top of our culture believed that nurturing is the single most important thing in life.

Note that all of these people had to have a genius level IQ to be included in the study as children.

There is a message in that study that I read in 1972 (or so) and I have lived it ever since.

Polgar is a good example and well-known in chess circles. Of course there are people who are naturally gifted at some things, but I believe that many people can become great at some things by pure hard work and practice.

Then you are of the group who favors genetic predisposition (nature), as witnessed by your statement about those who are naturally gifted.

I took this a little differently.

Years ago I got my first Golden Retriever after watching a Hunting Test. The litter this dog came from was a real hot breeding. Many Field Champions including one National Field Champ. which is very rare accomplishment for a Golden. I promised the breeder that I'd train the dog so she gave me "pick of the litter" which actually turned out to be second pick. They took first.

When I went over to pick my dog we ran the entire litter through a "Retriever Puppy Test" which is kinda like a natural ability test. Do they go to the pigeon wing. Do they make a turn back . Do they run away with it .............. Then they have some sort of scoring.

Well the dog that scored the highest continued to outperform the rest of the litter in the field for over a year. So in this case, the test seemed to have some validity.

It would seem that the breeder would be thrilled to have a dog that did everything right. But she wasn't. The problem was is that the dog is going to see harder and harder test as it gets older. If it never has a problem then its never going to learn. The dog cannot survive the future on its natural ability alone. So we had to set up tests to insure it would make mistakes then we could correct them and the dog would learn something new, one of which is adversity and stress.

So how I took this is, natural ability is fine, good and an asset but it can take you only so far. You must seek the limits of ability or the limit will not expand while others that have less natural ability can overcome with work and acceptance of failures along the way.

I am in the other camp actually. You may have misunderstood my post.

Polgar trained his daughters to play chess and they became great at chess. I honestly believe that if he had trained them to play pool, then they would have become great at pool. Heck, even Shane Van Boening practices as much as he can so he can be better.
 
This is exactly what I've always believed. Yes, natural talent exists but it really doesn't mean much. There are simply way too many examples of people who set out as children to become the best at something and did succeed in doing so, despite not having any "natural ability". The Polgar sisters are a perfect example, their father sets out to make them great and all 3 become grandmasters...that's not a coincidence. In fact I remember reading an interview with the sisters and they said that they each achieved a level of success directly in proportion to the amount of time they dedicated to the game.

In the book Talent is Overated by Geoff Colvin he mentions a study how they went looking for natural talent in children violin players I believe, and they couldn't find it. Some kids went on to become world class virtuoso's and some were merely decent players but it was the kids who put in extra hard focused practice over the years that succeeded. edit: It may have been Malcolm Gladwell's: Outlier's that mentioned the violin players, I forget which one.


10,000 hours is the number of hours of focused practice they kept coming up with to achieve great success in any field. The evidence is overwhelming.

At the end of the day a person can do absolutely nothing about genetics, whether it's a factor or not.

So for practical purposes, if you want to be great at something (or you want your kids to be great) then the "growth mindset" is still essential even if you're absolutely convinced that natural talent gives certain people a leg up on the rest of the world.

The whole point of the article is that work and practice make champions. There are no exceptions. No child prodigy musician played in carnegie hall after spending an hour a week at the piano.
 
It seems a common occurance in sports to have "wasted talent."

Alan Iverson is a good example. He was a great basketball player that could have been truly amazing if he had applied and challenged himself.
 
That's so cool Scaramouche that you referenced Anders work, I worked with Anders when I was in Grad school. His and Neal Charness' work on Expertise and deliberate practice is interesting reading. Reminds me of an intersting memory for the table study I did between novice, intermediate and advanced/pro players.
 
In our society one needs something like a 70 HP Volkswagen engine to get through life; That is all that is required. Fortunately, most of us have a Ford or a Chevy 8 cylinder and that is more than enough to excel in nearly any area of endeavor, excluding astrophysics and similar disciplines.

The guy who hits the road with a 12 cylinder Dodge has a decided advantage when it comes to sheer power to learn and benefit from the learning.

Of course there are different kinds of intelligence that are used for different things, but if we are simply measuring horsepower and what can be done with it, that 12 cylinder rules the road, at least until it comes up against a 350 Cummins diesel – but that is another story about specialty engines.

And of course the better you take care of it, add to it, and learn what makes it tick and how to improve it, the more powerful it can become.

An 8 cylinder is enough power to excel at most things in life. And that is where the rubber hits the road -- so to speak.

The design of the equipment and the general rules for playing pool only require a 70 Hp engine -- at best. The average (8 cylinder) person can master the game with enough nurturing!

Just a little OT, but I once read something like all it requires is an IQ of 120 to do 99% of all jobs in the world, including being a doctor. The rest is training...
 
Let me get this right. According to you folks the only difference between any one of you and your pool playing skills and Efren's skills is the amount of practice time, the age at which you began playing, and your dedication. Whatever that means.

But... Efren started young and practiced and played an insane amount of pool. So not sure you are helping your argument there.

So let me get this right. According to you, Efren would be the same player he is today regardless of the amount of practice time he put in, when he started playing, and his level of dedication. He could just pick up a stick without ever having played/practiced and be the best player of all time? Patently absurd!

You can play this game from both sides of the "fence". The vast majority of people who spend time studying learning, skill acquisition, expertise...would argue that both genetic predispositions and practice/effort/dedication play roles, but that without intense amounts of very specific, focused, practice, (or even larger amounts of "unfocused" practice) people simply cannot develop high levels of expertise/skill. We're not necessarily talking about being the single best at something, for that I don't think anyone would argue that genetics (along with a ton of hard work) are important, it's just that most people have "enough" genetics to be very good at many things if they apply themselves to it, much like JoeW was trying to point out earlier.

Think of it is this way. We could set up an experiment of sorts, Mosconi Cup style, but we won't play it until 2015. You can bet on one of these two teams, who would it be?

1) 6 people who were selected to be on the team based on having low/average natural ability right now, but practiced systematically for 6-8 hours a day for the next five years.

2) 6 people who, before the day of our Mosconi cup, are selected based on having the highest "natural ability" in the world.

By the way, how would you assess natural ability? Is it how "good" they are, how "smooth" they are... If you're arguing that it's genetics, then practice should change anything so you should be able to find 6 people that can play at a world class level with little to no practice/experience, correct?
