Purple Heart Break Shaft

I was thinking about building a purple heart shaft for my break cue, and was curious about a couple of things.
Those of you who have used one, what did you think of it?
The other question I had was for the ferrule. I want to use linen phenolic, with a White Diamond tip.
What would be a better choice as far as the ferrule goes, capped or not, and would it make a great deal of difference in how the cue hit?

I had a ph shaft briefly and it hit pretty stiff. I thought it broke ok but the taper wasn't very good on it and I didn't have it long enough to change that.

As far as the tip is concerned I would recommend a non capped approach just because I've had a lot of problems with the white diamonds staying on phenolic. Its seemed like no matter what I used to bond them after about 2-4 weeks they were off. I never had this problem when I was putting them on uncapped ferrules regardless of what type it was.

Heres a couple pics of one I made a while ago( maybe a year) I used my standard shaft taper on it because the PH is so stiff. The shaft breaks awesome. I used a white diamond tip with a capped LBM ferrule and had no problems at all. Still holding strong thousands of breaks later. I used a 1/4 inch solid cap in top of the ferrule for strength.Hope this helps Dave

I am currently using a white diamond installed on a black phenolic ferrule (capped ofcourse). I have had no problem so far, tip has held.

I make, and sell a lot of PH shafts. They hit wonderful. I use my standard pro taper and usually a 12.75 to 13mm tip with either a White Diamond or a Tiger
Break/Jump tip. Currently, I am installing a Tiger Icebreaker tip. My choice of ferrules, all uncapped, are 3/8" diam I-4 or G-9. I use 3-M gel on all my tips
and have never "lost" one. One other thing, I like to install an Ebony insert and a G-9 or phenolic sleeve. Hope this helps and good luck.

the hit is harder than Maple to me and for break cues they are OK,but on a playing cue i have no use for it.they are alos slightly heavier possibly adding to more deflection.again on a break cue i wouldn't be too concerned about it,but a good piece of dnese Hard Maple is hard to beat for any kind of shaft.

I would not use a ferrule at all. If you are using it for breaking, put a padd directly on the Purple Heart shaft end, and then attach a White Diamond or other Phenolic tip directly to it.

You do not have to use a Ferrule!!!!!!!!!

Have made quite a few shafts with purple heart and blood wood and they hit very solid but usually weigh more than maple , on average about an ounce per shaft ... Made a JB for a guy with bloodwood and it jumped like crazy ... I have to choose clean straight grain , no runout or figure ... remeber guys the figure in your wood is diseased wood , and not necessarily weak but not as stable or dense as clean grain ... Also the figured wood has hard and soft spots that won't cut and sand evenly so beware if making shafts ... Ever made a birdseye or curly shaft and sand it to finish and it feels like water looks on a windy day ... That's the hard and soft spots , been there done that ... Life is short enough without adding frustration to it ...Good luck ...
