Do ph shafts require a finish/coating on them? I've seen some with some without. I recently bought one that has a thick coating of what I would guess is epoxy. It was up to the tip, and after breaking with it a couple time the coating chipped off the leather leaving a jagged edge on the ferrule.

You have to seal them properly or the shaft will turn blue from the chaulk! JK

PH has a real course grain. I have known some cue builders who were afraid of getting splinters using PH for shafts. I seal my PH shaft with a good coat of epoxy and tell the customers to use a cue whiz on them to it gets to thier liking. I don't put it on so thick it will chip or epoxy the tip though. Always best to contact the maker fore thier recomendations, but yes IMHO PH shafts need some sort of finish to fill the grain. It's OK to sand it down to where you feel the wood again. Just watch out for shaft bluing if you do.

The other shafts Ive seen were like ash grain, wasnt bad. Blueing isnt a concern of mine. Maybe Ill just feather out the glue on the ferrule then.

There is no reason to have epoxy all the way to the tip. 4" of finish at the joint and sanding sealer on the rest of the shaft will do fine. Yes, some purpleheart has very open grain, some does not. The epoxy should be sanded off and repaced with a sanding sealer.

Many apply several coats of super glue to purple heart shafts to fill the pores and then sand back down to bare wood. I have done them that way and have left the pores unfilled also and both ways seem to be fine.
 
I have made 2 or 3 (for my own play). After the finish pass on the lathe, I finish sand, apply sealer to the main part of the shaft and burnish. I apply 2-3 inches of finish to the ends - standard stuff.

Mine are smooth and play great.

PurpleHeart shaft finish

Several coats of thin CA, sand down to bare wood and then finish as you would
a standard maple shaft. It will be as smooth as glass.
 
I use one or two coats of medium CA depending on the wood grain and follow it with thin CA, sand,burnish etc.
