Put Earl Strickland on Team USA in 2017 Mosconi Cup

Ken, it is unbelievable to me that anyone would try and send in an aging champ for -- like it or not -- one of the premiere events of our sport.

I think of great boxers, tennis players, golfers, and guys from other disciplines that still have that hyper-competitive spark, but alas, need to be passed on in favor of new, younger blood.

Yep, those damn baseball teams, winning World Series after World Series without any veterans, and nothing but ALL rookies on the team... oh wait, that's never happened ;)

What was the average age for the Cubs last year?

Oh, that's right: 29.

Who was their oldest guy? Wasn't it Uehara in the bullpen, at 42.

How old is Earl?

56.

In general, haven't baseball rosters been skewing younger nowadays?

doesn't know much
about base-a-ball

You made my point for me, but you didn't know it. 42 in baseball is like 70 in pool. It's kinda like dog years ;) It just does not happen often. In general, winning teams have a good mix of young and old. Just like the example you just showed. The cubs won with a mix of both, and you forgot to mention their catcher when they won the World Series was 39 and retired immediately afterwards. Does not get more veteran than that...39 year old catcher on his last legs. :D

When MD was easily the 2nd best American 9 ball player he was left off the team because of his antics ,he cleaned it up and with his play earned another chance
I see zero reason to put any player on the team ,who A does not earn a spot and B one that has repeated emotional breakdowns,, if it came down to a close decision between Earl and a younger player ,we have to take the younger player period
It's not a popularity contest or who'sthe most entertaining it's all in it to win it

But did you see Earl today? Got 2 games in a race to 9 vs a potential Mosconi Cup opponent.

If that don't make you believe the geezer has what it takes to lift AMERICA out of it's slump, then you sir, don't recognize TALENT!

WE WANT EARL! WE WANT EARL!!

(who do we want?)

EARLLLLLLL!!!!!!

Sadly, MD got sucker-punched right before his match at the Cup in England by a Brit. In fact, he was almost knocked out.

I knew something was wrong when I was watching it live when MD had such a deer-in-headlights look on his face, but I couldn't put my finger on it then. I recently learned what happened. Kind of sad.

Earl is playing well at Turning Stone. Nobody can take that away from him.

Like I said before somewhere in this thread, if earl can muster up enough old school earl to win this turning stone I'll be the first one on his bandwagon to make mosconi cup. However without a big win or even finish I can't commit to earl.

No, here's the point I made: Earl won the first of his five US Open 9Ball titles when he was 23 years old. His last at the age of 39.

See, didn't even need your MLB to Pool Age Conversion formula -- Earl's prime years are a perfect fit for the roster of any MLB World series contender ;-)

He's defeated a lot of young guns as of late. In the last two tournaments, he defeated veteran Johnny Archer twice now. Johnny, though, hasn't really been playing much in tournament settings, I don't think. Earl has, however. He's showing up when it comes to tournament play. Despite his age, he's playing better than most. Even Earl's 85 or 90 percent of his prime shooting capability is better than most today. He does know how to win.

Earl puts a lot of effort into staying fit, which I know helps his game. Keith used to be the skinny one, with a 32 waist. Earl's the thin one today, thinner than Keith. Keith has a 36 waist today. Photo taken a month ago.

Here's a list of players that Earl has beaten at Turning Stone so far.

Erik Hjorlfeifson
Holden Chin
Bucky Souvanthong
Ron Casanzio
Johnny Archer

Well that sure is a murderer's row of players equal to the quality of talent Earl would face in the Mosconi.

That Bucky is on a tear at Turning Stone. He did well at the Don Coates event in North Carolina last week.

Players put their money where their mouth is, and action really does speak louder than words, especially words written by knockers on a pool forum.

Go, Earl, go!

Bucky is still in....beat Rodney last night.
Sossei beat Shuff...I kinda hope he doesn't get a cue sponsor....
...plays with an extra good looking Southwest

I remember Bucky from about 10 or 12 years ago, and he was strong then too. Great player!

Looks like he's been hitting the tournament trail lately.

I'd like to see Earl get a chance at being in the MC... Hopefully he could muster the inner strength to be a perfect gentleman. If he "goes off", then he has to pay for his sins, just like anyone else would. Maybe banishment from any "points tournament" would work for starters.

I don't know what to do about Earl, I just like watching good play, but I'm opposed to any flareups.

Fair enough, we all know Earl's on his last legs. But, so was the aptly nicknamed "Granpa Ross" on the Cub's roster last year ;)

Mosconi Cup needs to be "fun", and if the Euro's hate him this much, it makes me root for Earl to be on the team even more ;)

I get what you're saying, but unfortunamente, the US team has no wiggle room for fun.

Great post

If we were putting the best players together for high stakes gambling, Earl would definetly be one of our picks, so what if he's a little strange, lol !
