Put Earl Strickland on Team USA in 2017 Mosconi Cup

Ok , AZ, here's the bottom line on everyone one of us in this thread...

Then you should back the top 5 and let them take turns playing Earl. His behavior is not appropriate on many occasions but his high gear is hard to deal with!

I would LOVE to back the top five US players against Earl, do you know anyone that would stake him? You can pick, 10 Ball, 9 Ball, 8 Ball, or 1 Pocket.

Was thinking the same thing. Remember, JAM said you're just some stakehorse and your opinion really has no bearing. Lol.
I'll take a little of your end on this. GL

I watched Earl and dave matlock play at the bca in vegas in 2004 or 2005 and after looking forward to seeing Earl play for the first time he didn't even try to win. He arrived at the last minute with no warm-up and sulked in his seat for some reason. I swore then I would not be fooled twice and pay to see him play again unless his attitude completely changed. (Btw; it was a pleasure watching matlock play for the first time)
I have been a pool fan for many years beginning in 1968 playing straight pool with Tom Jennings (who won straight pool championship in 1975). I don't play pool anymore but i love watching pool for the same reason I like boxing: when you are familiar with the players and their past history and the nerves of steel and heart that can overcome a skill disadvantage it is enjoyable to watch. I watched a lot of great players at bellflower hardtines in the 90s and Jay helferts los angeles in 1993. What a pleasure watching Mark tadd, a young Dennis hatch and I always enjoyed watching keith. As the local Calvin put it; "nobody shoots a prettier game of nine ball that keith!) But as a fan of pool I would tell keith stop living in the past and get back playing!
Just my 2 cents or whatever it is worth as a fan of pool.
I say no to earl.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences, Pat. You are truly a longtime pool aficiando for sure. Wish we had more tournaments like those you referenced.

Having recently turned 60, Keith, for what it's worth, just received his AARP membership application. :grin-square:

He has recently stepped out and began playing in local and regional events. Not sure what the future holds. Money is tight, and it is expensive to attend far-away events when you have to come in first, second, or third place to break even because of the expenses, e.g., entry fee, hotel, travel, food, miscellaneous.

He still has his table-side swagger when shooting pool. I always enjoyed seeing how he moves around the table.

I hope Keith reads your post. He'll like it a lot. :)

The question you should really be asking is whether you would want to back Earl against the top 5. Giving that question some thought might make you have to start actually being honest with yourself about where Earl really stands. If you would in fact like to stake those matches all I can say is I hope you have a lot of money that you don't have any need for, because you are going to lose it, and don't give up your day job to become a stakehorse because that career path would clearly never work out for you.

There is no doubt Earl still has a pretty high gear, but it isn't as high as it once was, it doesn't come out anywhere close to as often as it once did, and it doesn't last for nearly as long as it used to on the occasions where flashes of it are seen. While Earl can still have some moments of top 5 level type play at times, he is no longer a top 5 player.

Time for some honest math....you can like a player's chances and not like the game if
you back him....two different pay-offs.

EARL should not play at the mosconi not other events

Earl is a disgrace to the game and has been for years. Forget the camel tour, Mosconi mics getting shut off because of him, sharking his opponents, disrespecting officials etc I don't think he has the game anymore.

As a Euro fan hope he does play as good to see him whine and get whooped every time.

Earl had his day.

It's time to let the past be the past and put the new generation in the ring.

My thoughts exactly Lou.

Ken

Ken, it is unbelievable to me that anyone would try and send in an aging champ for -- like it or not -- one of the premiere events of our sport.

I think of great boxers, tennis players, golfers, and guys from other disciplines that still have that hyper-competitive spark, but alas, need to be passed on in favor of new, younger blood.
