Qlympics

I was wondering same thing. Pretty bad coverage for an event promoted by BCA. I don't think that it got a very good turnout but there were alot of events going on at the same time.

The promotion of the event was garbage. Even up to a week before it there was confusion on what you had to do in order to enter.

No surprise that there were no updates and no information on match ups.

US OPENS
Tony Chonan won the 1P
John Brumback won the Banks
Huidji See won the 10 ball
Rafael Martinez won the 14.1

Louis Ulrich won the BCA mens masters 8 Ball and was runner up to Huidji See in the 10 Ball event.

from what I read about 30 to 35 in each event

I played in the barbox BCA 8ball event this past weekend. I do not know who won but believe that there were approximately 50-60 players in the event. I did win a little cash but blew the chance to go higher than 9th. It was fun any way.

According to IP:

?We?re very disappointed with the turnout,? event organizer and BCAPL head Mark Griffin said. With $5,000 added to each of these events, Griffin cited lengthy advertisement and flyer campaigns for the fledgling offering of these events under the Qlympics umbrella and expressed uncertainty as to where to go from here. ?I want to know where the communication breakdown is between us and the players,? Griffin said.

It would be interesting to hear opinions from players around the country as to why they didn't attend, or why, as in some cases, came for one or two events and didn't hang out to play in the rest.

Understanding i have of talking to players that the cost of hotel stay of many nights is too much money players spend they say have to win top 3 in all event to cover cost of stay + travel. I go 2 nights and place was empty no buyers for displays everyone complain. BCA good league but not good tournament.

Running that many tournies at once was too conflicting. I don't mind donating to a tourney but sitting in a hotel room for couple of days between matches is silly. If you won your 1st one pocket match on monday, you'd play again on Weds? There was 35 players I think. We felt like we were getting milked for a hotel stay and meals. I didn't play and only stayed a couple of hours. I'm not familar with league play or how the other tourneys were ran, this observation was for the one pocket and banks tournaments, that were going on at the same time?

M.G. is asking why the low attendance. Here's the reason I didn't go...

I live 70 minutes from Louisville so I go to DCC every year and spend about $1000-1500 on hotel, tickets, gas, vendors, etc... Qlympics is in the same city as DCC, it takes place within 2 months of DCC. So with limited funds and limited time off I can't attend both, I have to pick one or the other.

Having the Qlympics in Louisville is like opening a taco stand right next to Taco Bell then wondering why you don't have any customers!

I commend Mark and Greg for what they tried to do with the Qlympics and I hope they try it again in Louisville next year and, once again, I will offer up any help that I can do for the events to both Greg and Mark.

Perhaps they need to pick another time, since it was so close to the DCC this go around. Louisville is a great pool town and has good facilities to use for hosting events. I did, however, think that the advertising of the event was quite confusing. Start times of the events especially. I live right here in Louisville and never saw a single flyer for the event at any room. I talked to quite a few players around town and they didnt even know about the event. Just seems kinda strange.

I think the event would have drew many more local players if the entry fee was 100 instead of 200. I know that doesnt seem like a lot to some people, but I talked to several players who would have donated at 100 but not at
200. I would have played in the one pocket event for 100 but not 200. Heck, 100 more bucks is a ton for a school teacher, especially when you know that you have NO SHOT at winning.

I think the best event hosted was the Juniors. The youngsters put on a great show and they had a lot of fun. It is scarry when 12 year olds play as good or better than you do!!!!!!!!!!!! :(

Hope to see you all at the DCC. I sure hope I draw Brumbeck, Miller, Shannon, ect... in the first round of the banks so I dont have to explain to anyone why I got torched by Joe Nobody from Nowheresville.

Yeah, I had a couple of friends that went down and played in the bank game. They said they won their first match and didn't play again until the next day. When you only have 40 - 50 players it seems like you could get it done in one days time, but then noone would make any money. However, it appears noone made money anyway.

Confusion, Confusion, Confusion!!!! And I was very busy too. Alas all pro tournaments were through the week if I understood correctly. No one wants to go there on the weekend to see amateurs play. I really wanted to go see the TAR action matches but didn't do that either. I think the biggest mistake was scheduling this during the WPC. ALOT of players were there instead of in Louisville.

I know there were other pro players that could have attended but who wants to go somewhere and not have any action. Action is what makes DCC the draw that it is. I hope that Mark comes up with a new plan that will give us 2 great events in Louisville. IMO this event needs to be scheduled in the summer months.

Huidji See isn't a name most Americans will be familiar with. Here's a pic.

BTW, note the husband & wife team winning the mens/womens singles events. Shannon used to live in my neck of the woods and recently moved to Chicago.

I really wished the tournament would be succesful, so I didn't want to write before hand about this and jinx or flame something, but they really should have concidered the time bit better.

What's the point of organizing "US Opens", at the same time as there is World Pool Championships (also couple of other BIG tourneys before and after)at the other side of the Globe?
You don't only miss THE BEST PLAYERS IN THE WORLD, but you also miss all the audience which would come to watch THEM, and you miss many many semi-pro or amateur players, who would attend the tournament, if the best would be there.

At the same time, the attention of the world wide audience, but also the Pool Media (for example AZBilliards), were on WPC and Manila.

This kind of tournament like the Qlympics was (and I hope will be in the future also), needs all the support and some sort of Hype to be succesfull, so it cannot be held at the same time as the WPC.

I really hope that the economical loss wasn't too big to influence some individuals life too much. Also, like I said, I hope that Qlympics will be annual tournament with better planning and organizing (timing-timing-timing).
Now, only thing it really did, was to put some shadow on the Title "Us Open", as it was more or less a joke.
I do congratulate the winners, but Pool community cannot go too much for this "My World Championships", "My Us Open", etc... which these last couple of years has been the direction, thank's to Kevin Trudeau.

JMHO.
