Quality of affordable cues...

Quality of cues ... How much better is a custom cue from today then a well made production cues from today .. ... Probably not a big difference ... You could probably take a reasonably priced production cues and play just as well with it than any of the custom cues ....

I use to play with a $150 meucci sneaky pete and can run racks with that cue ... What more could a custom cue do for me ... Probably not much
Some cues are Louisville Sluggers, some are Mona Lisa's. There's an arena for both. The reason I went to the "more affordable cue" was peace of mind. They still play well enough that I can win a game here and there, while not having to worry about someone running off with it, if I go to the restroom.
Simple, quality, players (cues), are like beater cars. They will still get you from point A, to point B, it just ain't pretty...Anymore it makes my heart warm, when the cue snobs refuse to park their case next to mine.
😁

Do you really think people buy $4k cues because they think they will play better with them than $500 cues? A thought experiment: maybe a person who buys a $4k cue likes the way the cue looks better than a $500 cue, and it gives them joy every time they look at the cue and play with it. In addition, maybe they believe that the $4k cue can be sold in used condition in a couple of years for the same $4k they paid for it (or higher), thereby funding their next cue purchase.
Yep. Different strokes for different folks.

As far as I'm concerned for me $500 is plenty for a cue and it does the same thing as my buddy's Mike Segal, that he paid $2.500 for because it's signed big deal but that's only my opinion.

I was traveling through Las vegas with Verl Horn who showed one of his cues to a prospective buyer who found some minor flaw

I almost died laughing when I heard Verl's reply

Son this is a handmade custom cue, naturally there are flaws"if you want somehing perfect buy yourself a Schon"

i have played with several of the very best cues and several sneaky petes, any cue that plays right for you is the one to play

i enjoy fancy cues because i like them and they go up in price

If my goal is to win money on the road or playing strangers,I always play super fancy cues to draw attention.
Why?

The know it all pool hustler says I must be a fool for spending so much on a cue and it isn't too long till I have his money too

The pool cue collector notes that I must not be a broke pool hustler ,he figures I have plenty of money so he isn't afraid and I get to play him too

The only person who doesn't want to play me is the non gambler who assumes a fancy cue is the sign of a good player,
the rest of us know different

Just my 2 cents

Expensive cues are way over rated ..... Paying 4k + for a cue is nutty
so is paying $7.00 for a coffee but people do it. Different strokes. We all have our vices. We all choose what we spend our money on. I am sure we can all point out things we think are crazy that people spend their money on but in the end it is their money to do with what they will. :-)

I understand that ... My statement was just stating you need an expensive ...

How many times do I have to mention this. It's not the cue but we play with certain cues because we want to.

I want expensive and bought expensive. Of course everyone's expensive differs. A guy that buys a Big 5 cue finds a Players cue to be quite expensive. Players guy thinks Mezz cues are expensive and Mezz guy thinks Predator are expensive.

Predator guy with his 2.5k cue thinks my 5k cue is expensive.

It really doesn't matter.

I know it’s an extreme example, but Efren dominated pool for years with a 10 dollar due. My point being I think people put too much emphasis on “high dollar“cues. I’ve seen People run racks with bar cues!
And I think comparing what an elite player can do with cheap equipment who has god given ability we can only dream off is ridiculous.

I’ve made the comparison before and I’ll do it again. Golf pro’s play with forged clubs.. you can hit the ball farther with them and be more accurate but they make cavity backs for a reason lol for the rest of us with average swings and ability.

you can get a great cue for $500 for sure.

a good player can play super with any reasonable cue.
i have a couple i got for 5 bucks at a thrift store once and can play just fine with them. and they hit well. just like a top made cue.

all cues are 58 inches of a maple stick and the less you do to them the better they play.

you cant make them play(hit) better after they are cut to size, only worse.

Give a Banger a night dollar Cue, Banger will not be much better. Reason Pool is a Sport that required Skill to be good at.

Bet any Top Pro could still play well off the wall.

A house Cue would be ok for the person with Skill & Pool IQ.

Jmho.🥳

Those Licos/TaiCan SW clones were one of the best hitting cues you could get at any price. The few i hit i'd take over a real SW anyday. Sacrilege?? Maybe but that's how i see it.
Agree with you. MIT, Zeus, PISTON and countless other unnamed clones make a good perch for a quality shaft.
