I've been away from pool along time, but with all due respect the quality is not what I remember seeing in the 70's & 80's. Hopefully it will get better. Any thoughts on this?

I think Shane is the only U.S. player right now whose game could be compared with the likes of Sigel, Hall, Varner, or Strickland.

Not sure how American pool will get better when the game is failing to attract new young talent and pools halls closing everywhere.

I think your observation is accurate, it's not what it was in the 70's & 80's, due to several factors. The biggest probably being that pool is no longer televised in the US, and it doesn't draw the numbers, particularly dollars.

If it don't make dollars, it don't make sense.

When do Pool Players STOP supporting piss-in games?? It teaches bad form and practice habits... You get what you deserve playing 9 ball piss in anything type games.... The US is playing bad enough as it is. Plus no one, in professional pool likes to win (or lose) with this format. The 'I don't care-flip a coin' attitude that 9 ball (Texas Express) offers is NOT good for pool or NATIONAL PRIDE.

Make Change happen now!!...We (pool players) are the only way to better this sport and learn to practice (Perfect Practice) a professional level game. Stop supporting garbage pool. Just my opinion.

Where are all the successful pool players of the 70's and 80's these days?

Where is the incentive to be the best in the world? Why? So you can end up like Earl?

Today it's much more difficult to pursue a dream that doesn't pay a dependable, living wage.

It has nothing to do with the games we play.

It's not American pool went down but the rest of the world simply surpassed the USA.

Well instead of people trying to make tough shots to win games--------

today people are missing on purpose and calling it defense.

Now instead of a masse shot or kick shot-----

today people whip out their cheater stick or jump stick and jump balls.

Today people use Magic Chalk, layered tips, laminated shafts which is

supposed to make the game easier-----

instead of practicing for hours a day to improve your game.

In the 1970's, the pool cues were not that good and the tables were either

fast from being worn out or slow like a sandbox. In the 1970's, shooters

had to adapt to playing conditions. Today, everyone has a decent pool cue and

a lot of the tables play about the same.

To be good today, it cost a lot more money to get there. Not like the old days

where you could play for hours and not cost much. And of course gas and

everything else cost more today and there's not much money left over to get good.

With all the books and videos out today, you can learn faster, but still table time

is king like always. People today don't have time or money to be good.

I think today there are more good players------

just not as many great players.

You got that right!!

I think Shane is the only U.S. player right now whose game could be compared with the likes of Sigel, Hall, Varner, or Strickland.

There are a few guys coming up, but they are not close yet, work to be done.

A) Where are the successful people today:: in the stock market, and no where near a pool table.

B) The incentive to be best remains, however, it has abandoned the pool table market.

C) So why are you pursuing a dream that is not dependable?

D) It has a lot to do with thinking that 9-ball is a useful game that people want to watch. Find a game people want to watch and the game will turn around !

The game will never turn around at least not in the United States. It simply doesn't offer instant gratification like video games. There is no reason to go into pool as a career. The best in the world make peanuts. Why waste time and talent.

Playing 9 ball isn't instant gratification enough? The question has always been who actually tries to play pool for a living if they had the talent to do something else?

What, they will be ready to go by the time they are 30?

It is a laugh to hear about these "young" up and coming pool players who will be the next torch bearers for American pool and realize how old they really are. In the meantime the top talent from other areas in the world are winning world championships at 16 years old and a 18 year old kid from Taiwan came to America and made the finals in both CSI invitational events and beat SVB in the finals of the 8-ball and only lost to his older brother in the finals of the other.

America does not have any kid that is looking anywhere close to matching the powerhouse youths coming up from other areas of the world, none are even close.

The diamonds were a game changer...........

There are many players that would play at that caliber if the Gold Crowns and like were still the standard.

Diamonds are not very forgiving on the shot at all.

They have changed the game forever. You better shoot real straight right now or you won't get there for sure.

Players are good they are just up for a huge challenge with this great equipment.

Game changer for sure.........
