question about a Schon cue?

Ok I did some trading the other night and I wound up with a Schon STL7. I know it's not a great cue for some the cue snobs on here, but I like it.


So here is my question: Do any of you know what the joint size would be on this cue? Would you recommend switching the shaft to a Predator? If so, which one?

The joint size on 99% of Schon Cues is piloted 5/16-14.The shaft you use is really up to what you like.
 
I would recommend trying the Schon shaft before you switch to a predator unless you are already used to the predator and like it. Nobody can tell you which shaft you will like best, you have to figure that out for yourself.

I had a 314 and sold it, I like the Schon shafts better but Pagulayan played with a predator on a Schon and did pretty good with it.

As alstl said, your choice of shaft is a personal preference and nobody can tell you which one you'd like best - only you'll know that after rolling balls around with both. I've owned various Schons over the past 15 years and always used a Schon shaft. I've hit with Predator shafts and didn't care for them. Personal experience will make your decision for you.

I've been using Schon shafts since the early Nineties. I agree with alstl. Try the Schon shaft first. Not a rack or two but fifty or a hundred racks. My thoughts are too much supposed technology warps the mind. Play the table layout not the cue/shaft/tip game.

btw... the joint on a Schon is 5/16-14 piloted...and the diameter is .840 w/ a .030 silver ring. Predator, OB, Tiger, McDermott I - any of the after market LD shafts will fit, though the silver ring on 314 - Z - OB is all I could say for sure are are .030.
 
Actually, the jnt. dia. of a Schon is .835" although I have seen a very few approach .840".
Any 14 thrd. shaft will fit. However Schon's pilot has a slight interference fit with the jnt. collar that most Schon owners kind of like. It has a fit-up the way a true piloted jnt. should have.
I do all of the custom work for Seybert's and when I build a Predator shaft for a Schon, I duplicate the jnt. exactly. Not many dealerships do this.
IMHO, the Predator 'FAT' shaft compliments the Schon nicely.

What exactly does the interference fit accomplish?
 
I have 2 older Schons. They have 5/16 14 piloted joints. The shafts from any cue will fit that have 5/16 14 joints, but the shafts from a Schon will not fit on any other cue that has a 5/16 14 joint. There is something about the thread in their shafts. It will turn on about 2 to 3 turns and then tighten like it is being cross threaded.

Try playing with the Schon shaft. Then experiment with some different tips. A different tip can really change the feel and hit. They are great shafts, and Schon does makes a nice cue.
