Question about a shot..

Today during my practice I was trying different tipes of layouts when I tried this..
The strange thing is this: Lately I'm trying to modify my style of game by trying to hit the cueball center ball most of the time with minimum side spins...

So I tried to pocket this ball with only draw at about a tip and half down the center, but I made it just once or twice with bad shape on the next ball...

Then I treid to pocket it the way I've always pocketed it, low right hand english, and the I got the pocket and good shape 9 shots out of 10...

What do you think about it?

Without a doubt, I would try to pocket the 5-ball using just left english. First, I don't have to hit it nearly as hard. Second, the english actually improves the chances of making the ball and third, the position is pretty much automatic so long as there's enough spin on the ball and you don't end up hitting the 5-ball rail first. I mean, there is a window you need to hit but you're going to have to hit that window no matter which way you go.

i agree with Jude, thats what i would do. also seems to take the side pocket out of play. but, if i might add, this is a tough shot and position play. if you can pull this off consistently, nice job.

I've tried to spin it in, and it can work out... But the thing here that was not clear to me is if there were more chances of pocketing the ball without side spins or the side spin was just the way to go..

And by the way to me the draw with right english is a safer option cause when I tried the other way sometimes I scratched in the opposite corner pocket..

If you're scratching in the opposite corner, you're either not using enough english or you're hitting the rail first. No matter what the reason is, this is an important shot to know in 9-ball. It is a little unusual that it's used from such a distance but if you were closer, you would be expected to go this way. You may have to practice this shot a few hundred times.

Jude is right, no more than medium speed...let the spin do the work. It takes a lot less speed than most people realize.

I think you missed the straight draw shots simply because you never practice this shot that way. It's actually easier to make the shot with straight draw if you've practiced both ways - but it's much harder to get position. As others have said, inside spin is the way to get position with this shot.

A side note: others have correctly said you don't need follow with the inside spin, but just to be clear, even if you hit the CB on the equator (with no follow), it still hits the OB with follow because it picks up natural roll on the way there.

Side note #2: you can also make this shot and get position with plain follow (no side spin), but you have to hit it considerably harder (although not as hard as with plain draw).

OR, if you want to get fancy about it, you can go rail-first with bottom-left and take this reverse-off-the-second-rail route. If you don't have a girlfriend, this shot could get you one.

lol!

... and your action will be ruined forever! At least he will get a girl out of it! :D

To the OP, I would say this... Before you practice shots like this, you need to have the basic shots down. The kind where you have a good angle, and just need to play 2 rails, 3 rails, whatever.. And get good position from there..

Why do I say that? Because, imagine you had the CB by the side pocket, almost straight in. Could you get out 90% of the time from there? If so, then THAT is the time you need to start looking at practicing tougher shots. If not, then you are going to win many more games by practicing bread-and-butter shots than by practicing stuff like this.

I mean, practicing tough shots is all cool and everything, and it makes you feel good when you make it, but honestly, it sounds like you would be better served by practicing more of the basic position routes.

Good luck,

Russ

l agree with Jude but to hit the shot with sufficient pace to get shape on the 6 you are going to get some squirt which could cause a miss. It's just one of those shots where there is not substitute for PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.

The CB HAS TO travel so let it have travelling english..BUT stay with your new minimal english style. Most of us WAY over use english!

Regards,
Jim

Yes I know Russ what you're telling me althoug I can excape from that straight in 90% of the time.. I was practicing tough shots cause lately I've been playing with a pro to which I told that lately I've been playing a lot of 14.1 and my game has become stronger, but when I suddenly switched to 9-ball I was having little problems with though shots...

So he told me: in your practice sessions when you play 14.1 add an extra time of though shots in order to still be good at them...

Hope it's all clear cause english is not my mother language..:D
