What size pieces of wood are needed for the handle, and forearm of a cue, respectively? Also...what size would be needed for a one piece cue?

Thank you for your time. :-)

I don't build one piece cues so I can't comment on them.

My absolute minimum for a forearm is 1.1875".

My absolute minimum for a handle is 1.3".

These sizes may sound small to some but I've been doing this for 20 yrs. and have learned how to hold tolerance. I don't like to make chips/waste. I read a similar thread not too long ago where the poster stated that 1 1/2" was required for a shaft. Since a finished shaft is .840/.850" at the joint & .510" at the tip, more than 1/2 of the starting mtrl. winds up on the floor as waste. That's not necessary. Maybe I'm a little more conservative than most.

i try to get everything in 1.5" squares, but smaller will work.i won't buy smaller than 1.38" in case i had a forearm in mind, nut wanted to switch it to a handle instead.

the lenght of the cue pieces should b around 18" so you can get the forearm and butt off the samw piece to match each other.

the handles i get are 12+" or longer.i usually core the handles and all i need is a small 12" or longer piece of wood since my handles are 11.75".if you wnated to use a solid handle you will need 18" or longer so you can use the bottom of the handle piece for a butt sleeve dowell and you will need 1-2" for a tenon on the front.

Thank you for the answers gentlemen. Yeah...I"ve seen that many go with
1.5 x 1.5 . What's the typical length you need for a forearm?

mine are 12.25",but there are lots of different choices for forearm, handle and butt length.

i always stick with the same formula. i dont think you can go wrong either way bc a straight taper would be the same. legnth would only change your balance point a bit. i do..
12'' forearm
12.5'' handle (13'' handle for 29.5'' butt)
3'' buttsleeve
1.5'' delrin

now my skip weston has equal forearm and handle 12.5'' 3 in buttsleeve 1.5'' delrin = 29.5''

I like 14" minimum for my forearm blanks, and 12.5" minimum for my handles. Most of my cues are 13-13-3 or 13-12-4 ratio & most generally I use a maple dowel threaded into the back of the handle to house the butt sleeve & cap, so my handle stock is usually shorter than forearm stock.
