Question about measuring pocket size

I tried the search function, but no luck; so you guys get another newbie question:

When you measure the pocket size are you measuring the distance from one rail cushion to the other rail cushion at the point where the cushion makes its angle into the pocket? (i.e. the widest part of the pocket?)

Also, are the width of the pockets (just the pocket part, no cushion) standard or do those vary too?

No offence Mr. Sullivan but you can take a tape measure and measure from point to point and there is your pocket size. Not measuring between the balls (hundredth of inches btw :lol in the jaws of the pockets...

From the WPA (World Pool-Billiard Association) equipment specifications:

"The pocket openings for pool tables are measured between opposing cushion noses where the direction changes into the pocket (from pointed lip to pointed lip). This is called mouth.

Corner Pocket Mouth: between 4.5 [11.43 cm] and 4.625 inches [11.75 cm]
Side Pocket Mouth: between 5 [12.7 cm] and 5.125 inches [13.0175 cm]"​

I don't see it as a joke at all but rather a good way of creating a standard for measuring a pool table pocket. As far as what unit of measurement to go by....Greg divided an inch into 32 equal parts and then used two of those. You could use smaller units but in this case not necessary.

I think its handy for the guy in a room or hall that may not have a tape measure handy.

Since the pocket facings are not parallel with each other, but the tang on the end of your tape measure forms a right angle with the tape, the way you are doing it is subject to a bit of error.

Suggestion -- turn the tape measure around 180 degrees (with the numbers facing you), and then use the bottom edge of the tape to take the measurement. Also, it helps to make the starting point somewhere other than the end of the tape, like putting the 10" line of the tape measure on the left point of the pocket opening and then reading the pocket mouth dimension off the right point (e.g., at 14 1/2" for a 4 1/2" pocket).

I was always told to measure from the balls, not the shaft.

Often I will use fruits or veggies and measure them with a Vernier caliper, then I find the ones that fit close and "WALA" I have the size.

Or should I say Walla Walla?
