Question about my new McDermott cue

Hey guys I received my first cue right before Christmas season and after inspecting it and playing with it I had a couple of questions that hopefully someone here can answer. First of this is my first cue, the tip of the new McDermott wasnt smooth it was all rough and scuffed up is this normal/good? (it definitely holds chalk but it doesnt have a smooth hitting surface) Second if you look at the pin in the butt section you can see glue in between the inner and outer layer of wood. It is not that noticeable but you can easily see it, the wood inside isnt flush wood to wood there is visible glue in-between. Can anyone tell me if this is fine or should I send it in to get checked? My friend ordered a Viking cue and it didnt have any of these problems, the tip was smooth and there was no visible use of glue anywhere. I thought the quality of the two brands was similar. The cue does hit good, but I am not sure if it is just because its not a house cue, which I always used before. Thanks in advance for any help.

As far as the tip goes, it is standard to have to shape and burnish a new tip to your preferences. Not all cues come with the same tips, hence the differences between your friends and yours. Search previous threads for in depth tip maintenance if your unsure of shaping/burnishing.

Not sure on the glue issue.

McDermott

I would email or call McDermott directly http://www.mcdermottcue.com/ContactUs.asp with your question about the glue. (glue should not show anywhere on the cue)

As far as the tip, it sounds like it just needs to be shaped. Find a local cue sales/repairman or pool hall owner and ask them to shape your tip.

Good luck with your new McD!

Just from what you're saying the tip sounds fine to me. It will smooth out as you chalk it and shoot with it for a while, some just come roughed up a bit. As far as the glue thing goes I would bet if you posted a pic there are a lot of McD owners on here that could tell you if it's normal or not. I used to have one, but no more, so I can't look for comparison but it's a whole different joint style than the Viking so don't go by that.

The tip is SUPPOSED to be roughed up, not smooth. A roughed up tip holds chalk better. Your friend's tip will need to be roughed up before it will hold chalk well.

As far as shaping the tip, look at the tip from a side profile.. The curve should either look like the curve of the edge of a nickel, or a dime. Judging by your questions, I would recommend you shape your tip to the diameter of a nickel. You can use pretty much any file, or just glue some fine sandpaper to a small piece of wood, and use that to shape your tip.

For the love of god, spend $5-$10 on a tip shaper, I like willards the best... it'll save you from screwing this tip up, and maybe once or twice in the future too... a file or sandpaper is fine for the guys who know what they're doing, but for the rest of us tip shapers are well worth the cost.

Where or who did you buy the cue from?

Thanks for everyones responce

I do have a shaper the Cuetec Bowtie and I already shaped the tip, thanks for the nickel radius advice. I got the cue straight from the factory I had some changes done to the shaft, I got a smaller (12.5mm) diameter. My main concern wasn't the tip it was the butt part with the glue showing in between the inner and outer piece of wood as you look into the pin.
