Question about Shafts

I'm sure this has been addressed but I couldn't find it in the search.

With the different types of predator shafts and OB shafts how do I know, or find out, which is the best for me? At $200 a pop trial and error isn't an option.

Any advice? Thanks in advance and sorry if this is messed up or in the wrong place I'm new and still trying to figure out which way the doors open.

there isn't that huge a difference in the different LD shafts from all I can tell other than maybe sound. Functional differences would be tip size and taper.

The only thing you realistically can do is try to find people at the pool hall or local league who have the shaft and ask to borrow it for a game.

From what I saw in independent tests, the predator Z2 has the lowest deflection of shafts. Any low deflection shaft will require an adjustment period as your aim point with English will now be different. So even borrowing one for a game or two won't tell you a lot until you do adjust.

For what it is worth, I have a Z2 and an OB2. They are both fine, but my personal preference is drifting toward something stiffer, with a larger diameter or a conical taper.

I know how to adjust for any squirt, so a stiff feel is becoming more important.

The only way you will know for sure what YOU like best is to try different shafts.

Good luck on your quest.

The only way to find out which one is best for you is to try them and see. I wish I had a better answer but there really isn't one, some people take to a Low Deflection Shaft very quickly and others never really do. If you have any retailers near you that carry OB and Predator shafts go check them out, not sure about Predator, but OB sends there dealers demonstrator shafts so that people can try them out.

Other than that ask a friend to use one of their shafts and see how you like them on your cue, of course you will have to find one with a matching thread. If you don't know what thread pattern your cue uses, send me a PM. with the cue model and I will help you identify the thread.

Like you said above these shafts are not cheap, so I totally understand why you would want to find what is best for you before you spend the money.

Good Luck

You're right that it'd be silly to waste 200 bucks just to try a shaft. At the same time, it'd be silly to buy one just based on some internet advice... you might found out that no matter how many words people type about the shaft, you hate how it feels when you hit balls.

These are the two most popular shafts you'll find at any pool hall, you will have no problem finding people with these shafts. Just look for the z2 logo or the funky OB brown ferrule, then try just asking nice. You'll find someone willing to let you hit some balls with 'em.

What part of the country do you live???
I would let anyone try my arsenal of diff stuff and I think there are many folks on here like me-if u list area, someone may step up and meet with u to try their stuff.

I think, in the end, you'll adjust just fine to whatever you buy, I can't get past the look of ob shaft ferrules...it's maybe just me...good luck.
