Do y'all use an ld shaft. And how has it affected ur banking. I ask cause I have always banked with English and since switching to an ld shaft I've been missing balls by 2 diamonds or more. I'm just curious how the top bankers feel about ld shafts and if they use them.

This question goes out to everyone else as well.
Thanks,

Dennis

I am curious about this too, but missing balls by TWO DIAMONDS??? Damn, that's a buttload of low deflection!!!

Your telling me. I'm off so bad I don't even try to bank anymore. And it sux cause I used to bank better than I should have. I banked better than I should have. But now bank like I never held a cue before. I'm lost.

I can share Truman Hogue's perspective. Truman prefers a typical shaft and a heavier cue of about 20.5. Truman likes to firm his shots and stay as close to center cue ball as possible. The heavier cue makes the bank a little less work so to speak. Plus, Truman punches the majority of his shots, meaning he uses a shorter backswing and shorter follow-through. I agree with this perspective from a pure bankers point of view.

Missing by TWO DIAMONDS?...that's a lot of tables :eek:

..seriously..time to lose the LD..the greatest value of having your own cue
is how it spins

I'm certainly not in the category of Brumback but I do love to bank and will give you my experience using LD shafts..

Banks is my main game, hands down. I love it for many reasons. I tried all of the major LD shafts, Predator, OB, Tiger and a couple of others and I can't bank a lick with any of them..

Maybe it's in my head or maybe it's the fact that I've used a typical maple shaft for the past 20 years but LD just does not work for me.. Not saying anything bad about em, just not for me..

YMMV

For me, bank pool is more about angles and speed. I used to try and spin balls in and my game jumped about 2 balls when I stopped the spin and started firming the balls closer to center cue ball and shortening the banks with speed.

JB cues was built by Lomax and it has a regular shaft on it, I have played with it and it hits the balls real good. but its just a Lomax with nothing but alot of effort put into building it. John banks great its not the shaft. It does have a long taper tho, which I love.

I know Brian Gregg plays with a Sickles Custom Cue (aka Billiardbum on the forums), very nice crisp "Southwesty" hit. No laminated stuff there.

LD shafts...

LD shafts should only be different when using side spin and if you're using side spin on banks you have to be aware of the gearing effect.

remember whatever spin you put on the CB, the opposite spin will be on the OB...

practice your banking with this in mind and you will be able to do a lot. In one pocket avoiding secondary collisions on cross banks, using this principle is absolutely necesary...

You can use this to some extent to bank a ball hitting it dead straight and banking it at a backward or forward angle. This is also the best proof that gearing does occur.

If you aren't using side spin and you're noticing a big problem with banking then you may want to check your stroke and make sure you aren't swiping through the CB and that you're following straight through.

Personally, I don't like the LD shafts. I play a lot of banks too, but wouldn't think of playing with anything other than a regular shaft. Everyone is different, but I hate even shooting with anything other than a regular shaft. I have a Predator 314, that I use on my break cue, with a hard moori tip.

For Me LD shafts give zero feedback

Fatboy(Eric) is correct about the Steve Lomax cues, all he forgot was it is equiped with a medium Morri Tip! I can't believe Eric hasn't aquired John's cue. I also remember Brian Gregg playing with a Bob Owen cue , fitted with a special shaft from Fred Fairchild- And brian won the derby Banks tournement several times. and Freddie was born too long ago to switch to a LD shaft. mark

John wont give it up, i tried. LOL You know me well.

So I had Lomax knock it off-it terms of playability and he did, my cue looks different. Lomax can duplicate the hit of Broombacks cue 95%, and i reccomend that cue to anyone, just ask Lomax for the Brookback Special.

What is an LD shaft?

Beard

The only really strong banker that I've seen use a LD shaft was Danny Harriman.. It was 2010 DCC, he was using an OB shaft.. I think it was the OB-2, but could be mistaken.

It sticks out in my head because we had a short discussion and he mentioned how much he liked playing with it..
