Ever heard of a bank pool player named Marvin Henderson from L.A.? My buddy and I were in Louisville yesterday playing pool,and ran into an older guy that said he was the best he had ever seen.

Marvin was one of the greatest pool hustlers of all time! He rarely entered a tournament, but would go for the back room action. His best game was One Pocket, and he may have been one of the best ever at that game. He was a friend of mine in Los Angeles back in the late 60's. We hung out together, smoked weed, went to bars and chased girls. Marvin was a ladies man and was smooth as silk. I'm glad we had a chance to be friends.

I think Marvin was the best black all-round player ever.
He played 3-cushion,snooker and 9-ball at a high level.
His 1-pocket game was jam-up on a snooker table also.
Last time i saw Marvin play 1-hole,he gave Paul Bruesloff
10-8 on a snooker table at the Rack - 1979
He made 3-bankers look like hangers.Paul lost $110,000.
I watched the whole session 'cause i won a few thou.
I'm really interested if Jay knows of any equal in the black
community.I might be influenced by the fact that i always
won when i bet on him.

Marvin Henderson was considered the best ever all-around black player. Cisero Murphy and James Evans were certainly better 14.1 players but not all-around. I believe the only black player who might have been even close all-around to Henderson was Rags Woods.
Only Cannonball (who's prime was 10-15 years earlier) and Bugs could rival Marvin in all around ability, although Rags was damn good too. Cecil was getting there until he lost the use of his right hand at a young age. He played all games jam up!

Three Cushions - Marvin
Snooker - Marvin too!

I don't think you could leave Bugs off this list. While he was mostly know for his banks and one-pocket, he played all games well I'm told.
I knew Marvin very well. We hung around a bit in the late sixties. He was certainly the best all around black player I've ever known.
Another black player of high quality was Gabby, not sure of his real name, but not so much all around like Marvin. Gabby played with the best of them.

Yep, I knew big Monroe too. One of Buddy's best friends in life. He loved the pool action and didn't mind sponsoring a tournament on his own to the tune of $10,000. In 1980's dollars!
jay, how about "rotation slim". i saw him here in delaware in the 60's. took our local room owner and anyone who would side bet for a considerable amount in an all night affair. impressed the hell out of me.
I should remember his real name, but I don't right now. He was out of Detroit and was another legendary hustler. His best game was One Pocket. I never heard of anyone playing him Rotation. Too bad he missed the filipino invasion. I think he was still around into the 90's. Freddie knows him a lot better than me. I never actually saw him play, although he was at the Detroit Fairgrounds in 1963 when I was there. He showed up at Johnston City as well in the 60's. If he played anyone, I missed it. All I saw him do was sweat the action. George Hairston or something like that??? I might be way off here. I used to know his name.
