I've heard there were a few matches where Hann broke the balls wide open on the opening break, like in 8 ball.

Would you happen to have a video link to one of those matches?

Why? No one else does.

The story I read said the announcer called it a disgrace to blast the balls open on the break like Henn did. Most of the snooker I've watched they use a 14.1 type break shot.

If you blast the balls open:

You have no control over where the cue ball is going, therefore, no hope of safety
You create traffic problems

Recently I saw Jimmy White really open the balls on the break. He set up on the left side, just missed the corner ball, and the spin took ithe cue ball off the end rail and into the fifth row. He never repeated it, so I assume it was just a complete miss on the break:D:D:D

I've heard Steve Davis recommend that the fourth row, not the fifth row, should be the target. But in the past year he was so unhappy with leaving balls for his opponent that he started to roll up to the back of the rack, making no attempt to spring balls free. He got a lot of nasty comments from the snooker world and has given it up.

Thanks for the reply. This Henn guy sounds like a character. Is he still playing pool?

He is a real fan of me:D

there is no comparison between pool and snooker
at pool you dont need anywhere near the skill or training time that you need at snooker, at pool you definatly need to think alot more ie tactics and diferrent options where is at snooker it is usually obvious pot or safety. efren or earl etc could never make it anywhere near the top at snooker they could have 10 years to practise it wont happen.

the reason why snooker players have not done better at pool is because they dont need to yes a few do turn up and play for fun like ronnie osullivan jimmy white, mark williams etc but they did what i did years back maybe play 1 day before and go for a laugh with a snooker cue. if there was no money in snooker and the top 100 snooker players all started playing pool then after 4 months they would rearrange the pool rankings in a massive way. the only snooker players that play american pool more than once in a blue moon is steve davis and tony drago and they are more than a match anyone, i think daryl peach was a snooker pro from way back

personally i think they top 10 ish snooker players are so one dimensional or mentally so focosed and trained for snooker that you would get better american pool players from snooker players ranked a little bit back from anywhere from 300 upto 10 in the rankings would make the transition very easily if they wanted to. but there is not point as the money is not there

i have not hit one snooker ball in i think 3 years and only played pool for a week before 2 ipt comps but i will dust of my cue and put up $100,000 of my own money or more and play anyone in the pool world efren earl shane whoever, a snooker match and an 8 ball match if we win one game each then call it a draw, at least people will get to watch a good match.

maybe first to 50 or 100 games at 8-ball and maybe 10 or 15 games at snooker etc on a real 12 foot riley snooker table and equivilant pool table if any top player wants this ill play for at least this amount or alot more depending on location etc

my name is Quinten Hann any pool player wants some of this just reply.
before i get totally slated here i dont play anymore at all and am not interested in any other challenge match its not worth my time.
so dont bother asking to play me 10ball or 14-1 as i have never played these games. matter of fact i dont play anymore full stop but will come out of retirement for a snooker verse pool challenge, as i do miss playing a little bit.

The only logic in doing it is perhaps to get your opponent thinking what the hells he done thast for instead of concentrating on his own shot but theres nothing disgraceful about it. I remember him doing it and the commentators words(but not who he was). Totally stupid comment from a totally stupid commentator.

It's generally considered an insult to your opponent (especially amongst stronger players). Your essentially saying that you don't need to play safe against them. But of course, the best way to convince them to stop is to hit them with frame winning breaks, or a least some 50's.

How can something as rare as seeing pigs fly generally be considered an insult?

If Alain Robidoux smashed the reds open on his break during a tournament, I'd be a little insulted. But I wouldn't expect that from a man who got angry at Ronnie for playing left handed against him.

He's essentially saying that he is completely unconcerned about my offense, that he doesn't need defense.

It's an interesting approach, and I'm pretty sure it was unique to Hann on the pro tour. If anyone else ever broke the balls that way I haven't heard about it. I'm not sure what the odds of making a ball are but I have seen him do it, missing a difficult black the following shot.

If you make a ball and get on a colour the frame is likely yours to take. If you don't make any your opponent still has to clear up, and in unusual circumstances as long as you're not doing it every frame.

The game could do with more people like Hann to keep it interesting.

Anybody correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Neil Robertson did it a few years back when he was 8-1 or something down in the worlds and wanted to try something different. Nothing went in, both players had a good laugh about it too.

You know, you're right! About Neil anyway. I've seen it as well. Crazy Australians.

If I remember correctly it was against Ken Doherty in the Malta Cup, and he only did it because the frame was 'dead' - it was a group format, I think, and one of the two had already been eliminated. I think this was less memorable because it wasn't a ranking tournament, and at that point the match was basically an exhibition. Quinten, however, chose to employ this particular strategy in the World Championships and at least one other ranking tournament.

The frame with Neil at the Malta Cup

The format of the tournament at this point was group stages where each match was 6 frames long, like the premiere league. Being 4-1 down, Neil had no chance to win the match and an extra frame wouldn't make any difference for him in the overall standings.

The current entry tells about the Irish Open in 1998

As luck would have it, Quinten Hann played the same night, wildly smashed the pack in one frame, lost 5-0, and then told the Sun reporter that he had booked his flight home before the match.

I dont play in a league myself, Id much rather play mates who are better than me and lose 9-1 I get a far bigger kick out of taking one frame off them than beating some guy in a one off match because of a handicap system. Interesting though that the smash the pack open early tactic is being played by some better league players and for sound reasons. See:

Is it disrespectful to open the pack thread @
