Question...from production to custom

I've recently decided that I want to sell my cue and purchase a custom cue. Im a little concerned that since I've been playing with a low deflection shaft for so long, that when I switch to a custom cue, Im not going to like it. I guess my question is, do most cue makers try to make a more rigid shaft now that so many people use LD shafts? Also, are there any cue makers that are known for making a stiffer shaft?

Sure there are lots of cuemakers who make stiff cues. My personal favorite is Keith Josey, who makes a great cue for the price.
But you should be aware that it's the end-mass of the shaft that makes it low deflection, not the stiffness.

If your shaft is made of wood, glue and plastic and have the same taper and same diameter, it should be close to the same as the production shaft. None will be created equal but wood is wood.

Some cuemakers will make a shaft over 13mm which will be stiff and less work to do.

Make the switch. You will love your custom cue!

It may be a big change for you. Josey and Southwest are two that I know of that make stiffer shafts, in my experience. Low deflection is more about taper and ferrule length and material.

I play only with custom cues. Many custom cue makers will take a LD blank and fit it to your custom cue, including the ring work. You can also just purchase the LD shaft after the fact. I'm trying to standardize on two pin types (5/16 x 14 and 3/8 x 11) so it easier to maintain a couple of LD shafts that can be interchanged cue to cue.

Thanks for the responses. I guess I'll see what happens. Worst case scenario, Ill spend another 250 for a shaft

Just stick with the same joint screw. All my cues have interchangeable shafts because I insist in a 5/16 x 14 joint screw. My scruggs, Kikel and production joss can use my 314 shaft or any other.

You could always have a custom cue made with the low deflection shaft of your choice... that's always an option.

What's the matter with the cue you have now? And, since you want a CUSTOM made cue, why would you pay for a cue with a shaft you don't want? CUSTOM means made to your order. If your cuemaker of choice won't do that, it's not a custom cue, it's just a cue from a cuemaker that doesn't have a bunch of employees.

I would get a LD blank made with matching ringwork and a standard shaft made by the cuemaker. That way if you can't get used to the new shaft you have the standby LD shaft you are used to that you can use. Plus, if you are looking to resell it, I think having both options available would appeal to a larger market.

Low deflection shafts are not stiff....

They are super flexible allowing them to move away from the cue ball after contact.

Just get a shaft that's around 12.5 mm and it will be fairly low deflection due to its thickness.

Im not having one made, I'm looking to purchase one. I've been looking for a few weeks and most just come with the shafts to match the cue, which I'm just assuming are not ld shafts. I dont really know, I've never purchased a custom cue

Most cuemakers will work with you to get you what you want, be it their own custom LD shaft, or making a Predator shaft, for example, match your cue. Joe Callaluca made me a ferrule-less low-deflection shaft that I really like a lot. Decide on 3 cuemakers and talk to your favorite first about exactly what you want and see if you think he can do it. Have fun!
