question on a Joss cue

2nd post here, so be gentle with me :)

I picked up a cue at a poolhall outta town. Curious as to either, "did I get a decent deal" or "how bad did I get ripped off price-wise"; I searched around the internet to find info on it. I looked up Joss on a buncha internet reatilers, and didn't find the cue (comparing inlays) anywhere. I tried a number of searchs, and finally ran acrossed it. It is a Joss P-29 that I finally found on GOBILLIARDS.com. The site said it was made in Jan. of '04 for GOBILLIARDS only, and that 50 were made.

The question I have is, is this done by production cuemakers often (made for only one vendor), and do you think it hurts or helps resale value if nobody else carries that model? I don't plan on just unloading the thing, but resale is something I usually try to be aware of in other purchases because of my ADD-like obsession for trying new things. Thanks in advance for your replies...

Production cue companies will make cues for a retailer every once in a while if they're large enough distributors. Schon does the same thing for Cuestix. Falcon made a limited run of a cue Nick Varner designed called the White Lightening and it sells for $2,000

Depends on what you paid and if the design is desirable if you got a good deal or not.

I would have to agree with Jim after seeing the cue on gobilliards site. If they have it posted for 420 new. If you bought it new, I would expect you to pay in the area of 320 to 475 depending how desperate the seller was. Used, well that depends on condition and how desperate the seller was. :)

Resell, this is where I agree with Jim. Looks like a nice cue, more traditional style. The limited production probably won't play into the value at this point in time. But if the design and feel meets a buyers wishlist, you should get your money back maybe more. I have a very early made Joss SP and when I do decide to pull it out the case for someone to hit with, I still get offers of 2-3 times what I paid for it. Not for design so much but the feel. Never sell it though.

Did you give less than 250?

yes I did. :) It was new too (unchalked/unhit, in original packaging - opened to show a couple of potential buyers apparently). He also had a P-27, a P-25, and a Falcon (whistler series WS-6) for the same price. I liked the looks of the P-29, P-27, and the Falcon, but being an uninformed buyer....I went with the 29 50% on looks, and 50% on highest MSRP....???

I was looking all day, at several shops, and the 4 he had for the same price seemed like a very good value indeed. I would say well worth paying that amount even if it takes awhile to get used to. :)

I once read, though I can't remember where, that a Joss is 97% of a Schon at 50% of the price. I believe this to be so. I've owned a couple and I just love them. Good cue, and at a good price.

Resale on a used production Joss might be about 65-50% of the average purchase price I would say. I get that number because thats what I would pay for a used Joss aftermarket and that seems to be the going amounts on Ebay.

I did see that GOBILLIARDS had the same model on Ebay, after I'd seen it on their site. But the starting bid was more than I paid for the cue, and the BUY IT NOW was quite a bit higher. So, all in all, I think I made out fine....just didn't know if MSRP really meant anything if the model was only available to one vendor. After shooting with it a couple of times; it's play has put it's worth as much less important. I think I'll be playing this stick for awhile :) Sure, just like the Taylor Made driver I started last year with...the one that got replaced by the PING that got replaced by the Callaway, etc. LOL
