If you don't drop your elbow, your tip should finish down on the cloth. With a typical-length non-elbow-drop follow-through (and/or with an open bridge), the shaft should not bend.

NO! Many shots the tip may never touch the cloth...SPF=randyg

you may have an abnormally long bridge or you are holding way back on the cue if you are bending the shaft on ever shot. I just make sure my backhand ends up hitting me in the chest, then i know i followed thru and froze.

dave...Not necessarily. With a natural pendulum swing, the tip may or may not finish on the cloth. That's why we teach that the tip should be level, or pointing down, and AT the target. It depends on the shot, and it depends on how your arm works with your body.

Are you referring to shots with a shortened follow-through (e.g., soft "touch" shots)?

How can the tip stay level (and not drop) if you follow-through with a non-elbow-drop pendulum swing? Now, I understand how with above-center hits and with shorter follow-throughs, the tip will not finish on the cloth; but for the tip to not drop at all with follow-through, the elbow must drop or the grip hand must be behind perpendicular. Am I missing something?

NO.

When the cueball is struck on top (lets say 3 clicks up) the tip might never get to the felt. But the shaft should always be either level (to the table)or dipping down. Different positions for different bodies....same stroke...SPF=randyg

Certain body positions do not allow the shaft to dip down. On some of our students who have their chin close to the shaft, their shaft remains fairly level in their FINISH position......SPF=randyg
