Question Regarding Amboyna

Have any of you ever cut a piece of Amboyna that had no smell whatsoever? I cut a piece last night and it didn't have that distinct smell that it usually has, which leads me to believe it's not Amboyna.

Did you get it from someone selling it here? Maybe it was afzelia burl. I have cut that, and no odor I remember.

I know a gentleman that loves the smell of amboyna...he saves the chips in a bag for when he is feeling stressed. :p

I've already questioned the person I bought them from and he's going to look into it.

Was just frustrating. Was doing a cue of Thuya Burl points in African Blackwood. The Thuya was junk. Too many cracks in it, so I tossed that and the only piece I had left, I didn't like, so I figured I'd use Amboyna. I cut that and there was no smell at all.

The cue's getting Bocote points. Probably a better decision anyway.

Anyone ever experience a white haze forming over the amboyna after you cut it? Usually takes maybe a week to show up.........wipes right off if you rub it.
Only happened on the earlier cuts. After it has been in the cue and cut a few times it never happened again.
Reminds me of some type of mold or something. I've had these pieces for years so I have to believe they are plenty dry?
I've never seen it on any other woods I have ever worked with.

I use a lot of Amboyna in my Joint Pro. I did about 20 dowels and put them in the drawer. Couple weeks later they were covered with a haze or moldy looking web. Wiped right of and never came back. Weird looking stuff. Jim

Hi Tony,

I'm asked and they said it's amboyna burl. They burl are cut from our shop in Cambodia...the shop is run by my cousin. I don't know if afzelia burl grows there in Cambodia. I thought they were mostly in Africa. Honestly can't really confirm other than the fact that my cousin shop over there have been making expensive furniture and it's what they call them on his translated description.
Here are pics of the Amboyna Burl that Tony bought from us, we have these in 15" and 24" long.
