Question: WORLD POOL CHAMPIONSHIP magic rack switched?

So they've been playing with a paper magic rack (red one) for the whole tournament, then in the final 8 player I think they switched to black triangle wooden rack? I feel that this is unfair as some player lost due to the magic rack already. I don't know but I feel this isn't something you could change mid-tournament. Did the tournament director disclose prior to the tournament that he would change to a normal wooden triangle in the final 16 or final 8? Did he notify the players of this change or was this a sudden decision? If it was sudden then I don't know how the players agreed lol its very interesting to me. What do you guys think.

Non issue
Because racking is the same for each player of each match, each match is an opportunity to reset the fairness meter.

I don't think they should be using the template at all, ever, in a pro tournament and it doesn't surprise me to see a wooden one pulled out for the last few rounds.

Template racks are fantasyland.

Completely agree. I don’t like the magic rack myself but that wasn’t my concern. The change mid way is a curious move to me. I mean why switch is all I’m trying to get to. Was it a disclosed information that it was going to happen from the get go. Or who decided this and why

How can someone lose due to the magic rack?

I haven’t been watching this tourney but I’ve seen this same setup before and it was specified at the beginning that they’d switch to triangle for the final, or the single elim stage or whatever other benchmark.

I’d guess this was disclosed beforehand.

And now we are witnessing this new triangle rack having an issue sending the 9ball straight toward the bottom right corner from our point of view without any kisses.

First day of using that triangle I hope they fix this.

As I wrote this one rack later they stopped the stream and are currently trying to fix and issue. Someone is listening in on us 😂

I thought they switched out the accu rack because of Mikka's complaint when the ref moved the 9 ball to move the accu rack, because as he claimed, the ref didn't put the 9 back in the same position causing shane to see the 1 ball. I think changing out the rack caused more of an issue now.

I agree, too many times I've seen the template being an influence on the roll of a ball that just rolls on it and then rolls off in a different direction. The template should never play a role where a ball ends up.

That is far less an influence on the games that the ease with which the break is controlled by good players.

The magic rack is used in the early rounds because experience has shown that it's a time saver, but the break is too easy with the magic rack, and it gets in the way of having the cream rise to the top in the late rounds. That is why they switch to a triangle for the last sixteen, a practice I am 100% comfortable with.

It was announced prior to the beginning of the event that it would be done this way, so nobody was blindsided. Had the change been made without advance notice, I agree that it would be inappropriate. Similarly, the tables were given new cloth for the last sixteen, and it was pre-announced that this would be done.

Personally, I'd have preferred it had the switch to a triangle been implemented at the start of Stage 2, but after seeing the World 10-ball fall more than two hours behind schedule on its final day, I'm glad Matchroom does everything necessary to keep things on schedule, and they succeed at doing so.

Honestly, I think this was one of the best tournaments our sport has ever seen.

Here is a post event interview with Matchroom’s Emily Frazier where she addresses this. Says there just isn’t enough experienced refs to rack all the matches in the early stages with a triangle. They would prefer to do the whole event with the triangle.

Personally i'd rather see a template used unless you can train the ref to properly use a triangle. Seen more than a few that don't have a clue how to get the balls tight.

What if they got random people who knew nothing about pool to rack, so everyone got a slug rack and the breaks would be a lot more random?

I wonder if the players could keep from moaning about it.

At the last US Open, they had both referees and scorekeepers. We were all trained to use the accu-rack; a template rack. Every one of the 32 tables had an accompanying score keeper, who also racked the balls for the players.ach of the 32 tables. When the field whittled down, it was just referees.
