If someone is advertising a tournement with "money added" let's say $1000 and the ad does not state "based on so many players" or anything else. Let's say 3 or 4 players show up and each player drove at least 2hrs to get there should they go ahead and have sum type of tourny and pay out the "1000 added" or just turn the players away with no compensation?

what they do
In a perfect world the event would be held if two people showed up. We don't live in a perfect world however. What they do is cancel the event usually. They should either hold the event or put together something so the players don't go away empty handed after a long ride. If nothing else, give them something that covers gas and a little time. I have pulled over 200 miles to find a race canceled because of a lack of cars or the purse slashed due to a lack of spectators. It stinks but at the same time the room owners and promoters have to stay in business too.
A sincere apology and a few bucks for fuel from the owner goes a long way towards easing ill will.

Unfortunately, if they did not place a caveat in the flyer stating that the $1000 would only be added if a certain number of players were achieved, they should add the money, regardless of how many players show up.
But I agree with Hu as well. I don't want to see a business take a large financial hit like that which would discourage further ventures which could be potentially lucrative for the room and the players. A little gapper to the players who did show up to at least partially cover gas and a sincere appology OR voucher for another tournament to be held I think would go a long way to easing flared tempers.
