Questions about Oak Shafts?

I have seen couple oak shafts. They look pretty nice. What would the weight ratio be compared to maple? Would oak be more resistant to warpage? Would it require the same treatment as maple, time between passes etc? Just curious why isnt it used more often?

Are you sure they weren't white ash? Looks like Oak, used for snooker and pool cues for years though not all that popular. Nice hit with them by the way. But not as smooth as maple. Very deep grain like oak.
 
There are many varieties of oak. Probably white oak or post oak would be the closest to sugar maple weight, but would still be 5-10% heavier. White oak has a tighter grain and is split resistent. I have used white oak for butts on a couple of cues and they looked and hit good.

Oak is kinda ugly, and open grained. It will never be quite as smooth as maple but there's no other reason it shouldn't make good shafts. It's strong enough & stiff enough. Weight in a shaft would be relatively the same, as would the turning process.
 
Oak Shafts

I make a lot of shafts out of oak. Most players are pleasantly surprised by how well it plays. It hits somewhere between maple and PH. As far as splinters go:
mine are as smooth as glass.

Great looking cue. :thumbup: And actually the oak shaft looks better than the maple with that cue. I love the butterfly work you do on your cues.

More about oak shafts

About 3 months ago I shipped a cue with 3 shafts (PH, maple and oak) to a
cueist and asked him for a critique as to comparing the shafts. Here is his reply:

Quote: "BTW I've been playing with the Oak shaft lately, and you are correct, is the more versatile. The PH shaft provides/transfers tons of power, makes everything effortless, the Oak doesn't transfer quite as much power/energy but is far more "playable". As a matter of fact I want an Oak shaft with this cue".
(He is ordering another cue).
 
I see that Karen Core is playing with a heavily grained shaft. It's probably ash as opposed to oak, but you never know. I wouldn't mind trying one some time. I'll put it on my list next to a lake salvage shaft.

I'm the guy Bob quoted in his post, and I’m very happy with the Oak shaft(second from bottom) as posted by Bob. This is the cue Bob made for me and again I’m very pleased with the awesome pool playing cue he made for me. Additionally, Bob is very professional and very easy to deal with, and he’ll stand behind his product. Actually I’m in the process of ordering two more cues from Bob, both with Oak shafts.
