Quilted Maple

The top one is quilted.
The bottom one looks like curly maple to me.
They're both commonly used in cues.

joey is quilted maple hard to find. is it costly? id like to do something quilted in the near future

Yes. it needs a core. I have used some impregnated with a clear acrylic resin from Wild Woods, but it too needs a core.

When we get the quilted maple in it weighs about as the same as balsa wood does... so we send it by the pound up to Jersey and it's hydraulically compressed with epoxy resing to stablize it and when we get it back it weighs about as much as ebony/cocobolo does ... then it's cored and plugged with maple so that it can be counter-balanced for cue assembly !
It's a costly and time consuming process and that's why quilted maple is somewhat expensive when selecting this particular burl for a cue !

They said it's hydrauically compressed with epoxy resin so I will take their word for it, this is what they do and they are the experts in that partcular aspect of it....
I do not care what classification it becomes...
All I know is when we get it back.. it's exactly what we want it to be and that is all that matters to me and Pete....

I've gone to knife shows with Zeiler and we have come across wood stabilizers from Arizona.
Some are vacuum stabilized I think (kinda like veneers ).
Now, if someone would wanna epoxy resin my soft maple for cheap by the pound, lemme send some.
