Quilted Maple

I have a bass guitar that has what they called quilted maple. Do you guys ever use this kind of maple for cues?

The top one is quilted.
The bottom one looks like curly maple to me.
They're both commonly used in cues.

joey is quilted maple hard to find. is it costly? id like to do something quilted in the near future
The figured ones are expensive of course b/c we compete with guitar makers.
And, unlike us, they actually make money.

Yes I Have !

Here's a couple of pics of a quilted maple cue I built for prog8r here on AZ...

I think it's one of the most beautiful type of wood I have ever worked with...

Lisa,

Yes. it needs a core. I have used some impregnated with a clear acrylic resin from Wild Woods, but it too needs a core.

I have to admit, that one is crazy beautiful! Since the quilted is a softer maple, is it right for me to assume that this cue was cored?

Lisa

Yes it's cored but that's not all !

When we get the quilted maple in it weighs about as the same as balsa wood does... so we send it by the pound up to Jersey and it's hydraulically compressed with epoxy resing to stablize it and when we get it back it weighs about as much as ebony/cocobolo does ... then it's cored and plugged with maple so that it can be counter-balanced for cue assembly !

It's a costly and time consuming process and that's why quilted maple is somewhat expensive when selecting this particular burl for a cue !

Epoxy resin? That becomes Dymondwood.
Hydraulically compressed? That wood would become hay after it's been hydraulically compressed.
I like the two-part acyrlic resin impregnation instead.

Joey.... I'm just telling you what THEY do !

They said it's hydrauically compressed with epoxy resin so I will take their word for it, this is what they do and they are the experts in that partcular aspect of it....

I do not care what classification it becomes...

All I know is when we get it back.. it's exactly what we want it to be and that is all that matters to me and Pete....

Who are these experts?
I've gone to knife shows with Zeiler and we have come across wood stabilizers from Arizona.
Some are vacuum stabilized I think (kinda like veneers ).
Now, if someone would wanna epoxy resin my soft maple for cheap by the pound, lemme send some.

If it's that important to you I will call Pete and ask him the company who does this stabilization process for him in Jersey... apparently they specialize in this sort of thing becasue we have to send it by the pounds.... and they are very efficient with turnaround time !

this one used to be mine from Mason Houghland. Quilted maple handle, was a GREAT playing cue that I've regretted selling. Keep hoping I can buy it back, but not likely.

Joey, actually the wood is bought in Jersey and he sends it to Philly to get stabilized, Pete said he'll have the company info. for me a little later on this evening when he gets a chance to go look in his index for it...

As soon as he gives me the info. I will PM it to you !
