Quitting smoking....

OK....since it has been exactly 1 week, I can now officially announce that I have quit smoking!

Good luck, it's been slightly over 35 years since I quit at the ripe old age of 23. You're through the physiological phase now. You'll probably have "psychological" cravings off and on forever, but trust if you just dig down and push through them they go away in a very short time (minutes). You're in a tough environment to maintain your resolve, but it'll pay you big benefits in the long run. After you've been away from it for a while you'll forget all the bad things about smoking, it may be a good idea to make up a reminder list well it's still fresh in your mind.
Hang in there, you'll be glad you did.

Laura,

Does that mean that you are going to try to quit again? It sounds to me like you want to....

If you are going to quit again, let me know so that I can send you positive thoughts and willpower!!!! I know it isn't easy....I am experiencing that firsthand right now. But having supportive friends makes the whole process easier and more rewarding because there are people cheering you on and being proud of your efforts. Just like you won't let your Mom smoke again, you need friends to do the same for you!

Melissa

Thanks Melissa. yeah your idea of being surrounded by people is good. I have to quit, it is totally disgusting smoking is, yucc. I hate that I keep doing it and everyday wanting to not do it. Does that make sense?

Laura,

Of course it makes sense...LOL. I have conflicting feelings too. I actually enjoy the act of smoking...but I hated being a smoker. I know it sounds weird...but that's how I felt. I enjoyed lighting a cigarette and inhaling each drag. But I hated how my clothes and hair and skin smelled like smoke. I hated the ways my lungs felt after smoking all weekend. I hated spending the money. I hated the smoke breath. And I hated the thought of my lungs hardening with each cigarette. So, I quit. When I weighed the "pros" against the cons...I realized that I needed to take charge of my life and kick my bad habit in the rear-end.

But, I had to come to that conclusion on my own. It drove me nuts when people told me I should quit...blah blah blah. So, when I was ready....I just stopped.

I think you will do the same one day. Hopefully it will be soon since you really don't enjoy it anymore....but everyone has their own personal timeline for everything...so don't feel any pressure from outside sources!

Good luck! I will be here for you to talk to if you need it!

Melissa

Hey Melissa,

Congrats. As motivation you could think....If I keep smoking I could end up as short as Sarah....AAAAHHHH! Ok, so it's close already but take pride in the inch taller you are than me. Good luck and I hope you make it a permanent thing.

Keep going and see you soon.

way to go girl

congratulations. I also quit about 3 months ago. i went from 3 packs a day to none over night. the hardest part i found was getting over the need for that first cigarette in the morning. Just take it 1 day at a time is all you need to do. You can make it. By the way, start exercising.. i gained about 30 pounds so far and now i have to exercise. but it is worth it..............mike

Hi Mike,

Congratulations to you, too! I am on Day 20, and still feeling good. Fortunately for me, I was never a morning smoker...so that is one hurdle I didn't have to jump. (I would usually have my first around noon sometime.)

Funny you should mention it....it seems that I have gained 2 pounds in 20 days, so I played tennis last night and worked up a good sweat...and I will be starting a regular work-out with a personal trainer tonight. (For those of you who have met me, you know that I cannot afford to gain any weight....so I figured I would nip this whole quit-smoking-and-gain-weight BS right now...LOL!)

With any luck, I will eventually be a lean, mean, non-smoking machine! (Except I will never be really lean...I'll always have some curves...and I am not mean at all...I just look it sometimes!)

Thanks Sarah! Yes, I know that smoking could've stunted my growth....but what's your excuse??? Seriously, I know I am kind of short, but I am least 1.5 inches taller than you....don't be trying to take away that extra 1/2 inch...LOL!

Luv ya and see ya soon!

Mel

Well, I will just blame it on my parents :) That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. Keep up the good work.

See you in a few weeks.
