Quiz - Mike Davis's grip

If I remember correctly he holds the end of the cue and with a closed hand grip. Just going by vague memory.

For lack of a better term, he holds his ring finger out. (not out, out like people stick their pinky's out while holding "tea cups") While most fingers are "flush", his ring finger is bent out at the knuckle. Without having asked, I'm going to assume it's because he has a ring on that finger. I know that I can't shoot with a ring on my left hand. I can feel it touching the cue... it doesn't feel right and it's a disturbance.

LOL, it is very difficult to notice the small things like the grip because of the absolute unorthodox way he does everything else & yet still gets out!ceebee said:

I knew as soon as I typed it that way that someone (YOU) was going to pipe in with something. Well, that's not exactly the case about me not finding someone in their right mind. That's been done and we're together for a lonnnng time, just no rings. And yes, she IS in her right mind.
(the words just won't come outta my throat...I start gagging and choking) Did it ever occur to me that you were unmarried by choice...yes. It occurred to me for about 3 seconds, then I immediately dismissed the thought.
LOLSomething tells me you're not going to be chunky forever either.

I agree with others that posted that Mike Davis pivot point is in the shoulder. His heighth casue some of these adjustments. I also think he uses a pretty rigid wrist (which "ties" in with the shoulder pivot) BUT . . . . .I hink he is the player that "twists his hand and wrist a buch in the final stroke - like about 30 to 45 degrees!!
I amazes me how some players do all the things they do. Me - I have pretty good mechanics - I just miss a lot!!

Everyone is right. Tucks in the pinky, ring finger is awkward and he maintains a death grip at the very end of his cue. Mike is from my area. Been watching him play for years.. As I've told Timberly and some others in the past Mike while VERY unorthodox is very conscience of his stance & stroke. I bet in the 8 or 10 years I have been watching Mike play that he has changed something about every 6 months at least. Mike is a super nice guy and as long as he isn't in the middle something important he is more than happy to explain why he does the things he does in regards to stroke and stance. Now even after discussing this stuff with him. I still don't get it. But nobody can argue with the results
So has anyone heard how Mike finished up in the Carolina's 9-ball. Lat thing I seen was he was in the last 4 of the winners side???

LOL, not quite. I did notice Mike's because his grip is at the very end of the cue & he's got a thick silver ring on... wasn't too hard to notice the finger sticking out. DM just mentioned in another thread the other day that he's not married & never has been. Those are the only ring finger's I know about. There's one thing about the pool world... not a lot of the folks in it are married... it's a brutal lifestyle....whitewolf said:Timberly - watching everybody's ring finger

And the ones that are married are the ones that say "I don't play as much as I used to" and aren't lying. Pool players are married..... to pool. 33 and single here. As much as I love the opposite sex I just can't imagine myself married.
Just wanted to say hi to everybody. I'm new and just had to register for this forum because it still blows my mind seeing Mike Davis on this forum and on ESPN. I used to shoot pool with him 2 nights a week in tournaments at Bay Billiards in Va. Beach. He was in the Army and I was in the Navy and we lost contact. That was several years back (about 10), and I had no idea he had gone on to be a pro until I seen him on ESPN. I about fell out of my chair. I've been trying to get in contact with him, but unlucky for me, he has a very common name, lol. Anyway, I don't really remember his grip, I do remember that he used to beat me pretty regularly. I think I got something for him now though. Just kiddin'. Oh, Charlie Williams used to play in the exact same tournaments, only I didn't really know him other than playing him a few times. It definately gives me hope that I can also become a pro. I recently bought my own table and have been doing nothing but practicing. Anyhow, sorry to ramble, just decided to make my first post and thought I'd make it a long winded one.
