Racking template (?)

with this kind of being a Dan thread about rack templates and being a good sport,
not all wood racks play the same, like when racking for your opponent who is a grandmaster,
I try to use this rack, my favorite is the "ugly duck".

I think you may be onto something here. I like the idea of the three "Fat" racks, but the other options are just too far out into left field for my liking.

I think the "Fat" racks would put an end to most racking arguments, but rest assured, Corey Deuel would find a way to defeat even those racks . Don't think he wouldn't.

I may be as dense as depleted uranium , but I fail to see why it is not possible to let each man rack for himself. The opponent has the option to inspect and call for a ref. if all is not kosher. Perhaps this is just a way too simple answer to an ongoing problem. I, for one, have always been a proponent of the KISS system for dealing with problems.

Because just as a rack can be manipulated to bad, it can be tweaked to too good.

A sloppy rack/break is like to cause the game to last much longer, and where's your time saving then?! The time it takes to rack is negligible compared to the duration of the play.

That would be relevant only if a specific # of games had to be completed within a specified time period.
The winner of the toss/lag is not typically required to break (he wins the option). With the template rack & clean balls, what competent player would ever pass up the chance to ‘break & run’? Since experienced 14.1 players are usually better at nudging balls out of the pack left after breaking a sloppy rack of sticky balls, they might sometimes opt to let their opponent break. A game that drags on and involves strategy & safety play would likely seem more interesting to spectators than watching a quick runout (?).

You are describing every tournament ever played. Long matches are wearing out the players, both those at the table and those waiting for their matches, and the organizers absolutely hate it.

Your response takes julian's out of its context.

His time comment was reaction to someone's (I think YOUR) statement that triangle was faster. You have ignored that and then corrected him.

That's called a Reddick.

I only meant to imply that time spent racking is ‘wasted’ time, whereas time spent on a slower safety-play/strategic game is (IMHO) not.

How (unfortunately) true. The days when top pros played very long matches over several weeks, and traveling to numerous cities, are long gone.

This would be awesome for both 9B and 10B-call pocket-... You could have a dice roll to determine the game and rack configuration between each game. Winner break! Race to whatever.. Removes the lock up 'break artist' and offer true luck back to the break shot. I'm in!

It is fun, the first time breaks are fun to watch the "oh sh!ts, what the.. laughs", then after
that, ones' start thinking/trying ways to finesse a break for a point or a snooker, the so
many balls breaking the center line/ rail count rule is out.
