Racking up for 9-ball, have I been wrong my whole life?

I was watching the reruns of the CofC on ESPN2 last night and I noticed that they were racking the 9 ball where the foot spot would be. I have always racked the 1 ball on the spot. Have I been missing the boat my entire life or was that something unique to that tournament?

This I am sure of: the one ball should be on the foot spot. I don't know why anyone would rack with the 9 on the foot.

some tourneys rack it one way, some the other.......i think they started mixing it up to try and throw people off who had the break down (like coreys soft cut break). Seems like one year they tried that using the sardos rack and everybody was complaining cuz a wingball was dead in the corner every break. I think traditionally its the one on the spot though

I have noticed in a lot of pro matches on tv before that they rack the nine on the spot. That is one reason they can make the one in the side most of the time even with a lighter break.

Us open does it that way too. Keeps the niner on the table. At the TOC it wouldn't matter since it doesn't count on the break anyway.

The break box was a better (not necessarily best) solution than moving the 9 to the spot. Now the 1 goes in the side...so they didn't gain anything. In fact, that tactic gaurantees a soft break will be employed.

I am sure that wherever you place the rack (within reason), on the foot spot, nine on the spot, slightly off center....someone like Corey D will be able to figure out where a ball will go in. Someone who can analyze how the rack lays, gaps in between balls and can determine how soft, hard, or with whatever english you use, will probably pocket a ball.
