Hello,

I am a longtime lurker and very occasional poster. A unique opportunity has presented itself to me in the form of hosting a show about pool! I basically buy the time for the show which will be on beginning Sat Dec 11 from 3 to 4pm. It will run weekly and be heard in the Kansas City area on channel 1140 KCXL am. If you are in the area be sure to listen.

I am looking for suggestions for material to do during the show. I can cover any aspect about the game but can't promote the gambling side. It is a small independent radio station that is christian owned. Topics will include national, regional, and local news such as tournament results, league results, etc. Also, interviews and call-ins will be part of the program. Any ideas that you guys/girls have will be appreciated.

I have 3 goals for doing this show. 1. Have Fun :) 2. Promote pool in a positive light. 3. At least break even. I don't know of any other pool radio show, so this might be a first.

Thanks,

Darryl

Darryl, contact the Christian Poolplayers Association via this link: Christian Poolplayers Association website

U.S. Open Champion Tommy Kennedy is a longtime member and may be of assistance in providing ideas for the radio show. As a matter of fact, if you are able to contact him, maybe a radio interview with Tommy would be entertaining. He is a sparkling personality as well as a trick-shot artist, and he has the ability to capture an audience when he's doing his thing. He's a great guy, and if he's available, he'd be a great choice to interview on the air.

The UPA, the men's governing body of professional pool, has a mission to promote the sport. If you contact them via their website -- http://www.upatour.org -- they may be able to come up with some ideas in the way of upcoming events or new products they have to offer. Gabe Owens, the 2004 U.S. Open Champion, is from Oklahoma, and he'd be a good catch for an on-the-air interview.

There's a few instructional books out there that are of interest. Pool, as a game, is played by more Americans than any other sport. There are a multitude of games, though. 8-Ball seems to be on the comeback trail these days. Phil Capelle, pool's number-one instructional author, has a new book out. Most people know how to play 8-Ball as opposed to the other pocket billiard games. Mr. Capelle can be contacted via his website: http://billiardspress.com

Just a few ideas that come to mind. Hope this helps. :)

Excellent ideas Jam. We are planning on doing a lot of interviews. Many of them will be local players, cue makers, league operators, etc. but I want to also add a national flavor. I know Gabe and some of the other top players from this area such as Dave Matlock, Danny Harriman, Paul Gerni (trick shots), etc. Tommy Kennedy and contacting the UPA are also great ideas. Another potential great interview would be Keith  I would have to figure out ways to talk about the matching up without upsetting the owners/managers. I personally don't have a problem with the gambling but have to keep in mind the wishes of the owners.

This is so new to me that I don't know everything that is technologically possible. Hopefully, if it works, remotes, websites, and internet listening will be possible.

Thanks,

Darryl

Darryl, if at any time you wish to interview Keith, it would be his pleasure to do so. Give us a heads-up when you're ready. If you could come up with a list of questions or topics you would like to discuss, it would be be helpful and enable him to be able to respond off the cuff, so to speak. Send me a PM via this website, and I'll give you our home phone number and/or e-mail. :)

Danny Harriman is a good choice, too. I've been watching this guy for a few years now, and he's capable of beating anybody on the face of the earth. His break is super strong. He's actually super nice guy; from Missouri, I think. At the ESPN 7-Ball Challenge in Baltimore, which was aired on ESPN, Danny made 6 balls on the break. I thought that was phenomenal, and to capture it on national TV was the nuts! :p

Picture of Danny Harriman and Keith taken at Valley Forge Pro tourney at the Super Billiards Expo earlier this year!

Maybe you could get them to promote the idea of someone creating a Youth Pool League with various churches?

If you are looking for Christian-related Pool content you might also want to contact the Gospel Trick Shot Ministry (http://www.gospeltrickshot.org/html/gts_rack_team.html).

Just a suggestion, if I were doing something like this I'd try and get several hours of interviews on tape with people like Robin Dodson and Mike Massey, then break them up into 10-15 minute sections over several shows interspersed with other content, to give your listeners a reason to keep tuning in on a regular basis.

Good luck with the show!

Jam, you're correct and he's definitely one of the nicest people to ever grace the world of pool.

Also, something to think about when contacting the UPA is that Frank Alvarez (nickname "The Saint") is not only a UPA rep but he's also sponsored by a Christian organization. He's very well spoken and speaks at seminars for this organization. I think he could fulfill both the pool and christian aspect that would make both you and the station owners happy.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.
