Remember last year when the rumor of Rafael Martinez having died was bantered about and the conclusion was since nobody knew for sure, it was thought to be unfounded? I was wondering if anybody has seen or heard from him in the last year or so? I've been keeping an eye out on our boards and tournament results, but have not seen his name.

Too many rumors.
One old man I met at HT claims Rafael is alive.
He said Rafael is broke from playing 3-cushion down in Mexico.
Also claims Rafael cannot come back to the US legally ever.

Mexican 9-ball open

If Rafael is still around he will probably play in the Mexican 9-ball championship to be held beginning March 19th in Reynosa. Although he has acted up there in the past, they may not let him play. But if they do, the results will be posted at

I thought I remembered reading last year that Ernesto Dominguez had verified Rafael's untimely passing.

It was actually the opposite, Oscar Dominguez (Ernesto's son) said he was alive and in Mexico and Ernesto apparently knew the whole story.

I don't think it's an immigrations issue, more like personal safety! Don't want to spread rumors, but I heard he was in Mexico because it was a safer climate for him personally.

just more hot air!

I never knew him but a friend that lives out in CA was telling me stories about him. Seem he acted up quite a bit. :p

My favorite story is of him charging after Shawn Putnam in Reno when he was really drunk & he and Shawn were playing against each other in the tournament. Shawn took a break because Rafael had been belligerant to Shawn. In the hallway, twice, he charged after Shawn but was stopped.

Shawn is 6'4 and it's my understanding that Rafael is a short man. LOL, that was one of a few stories that were told to me. I understand he was quite the character.

RAFAEL MARTINEZ IS NOT DEAD. Or at least he wasn't the last week in January. I saw him (location edited out). He's doing good, looking good, and living in (location, again, edited out). I was sitting with a friend who knows him well, told me who he was, then yelled out, "Hey, Rafy! How you been?", and a short conversation ensued about where he was living and what he'd been doing.

Also claims Rafael cannot come back to the US legally ever.

Don't know if that's true or not. Whether or not he was there legally, he was in (one more time, edited out) in January.

Bob

He's doing good, looking good, and living in Reynosa, MX, just across the border from McAllen. I was sitting with a friend who knows him well, told me who he was, then yelled out, "Hey, Rafy! Don't know if that's true or not. Whether or not he was there legally, he was in Texas in January.

The fact that he is not dead is more then enough information. The rest may not be the best idea.

The disappearance of RM is still weird to me, especially with the IPT tour starting to get going. He would of been a lock to get in if he had applied. If he had $$ troubles, I'm sure he'd eventually make enough on tour to figure out his problems.

Other rumours had him sick, not looking good,etc... so hopefully if he's looking good as Cane says, he's healthy and doing ok.

What does it take to get "barred for life" as far as returning to the US goes?

Ah, I see. Well that's great news!

I contacted the guy who posted the tournament results
and asked him if he remembers Rafael playing there.
If he was there he should remember him, I think. I´ll keep
you updated.

Rafael did NOT play in the Tournament. He lives a VERY short distance from Padre and he had many friends from Mexico, Texas and other parts of the country, that were in the Tournament and he was there visiting for one day of the 3 day tournament... it's been more than a month now, but I believe he was there on Saturday, not sure. Read back... I never said he PLAYED, I said he was in South Padre at the Tournament... Charlie "Hillbilly" Bryant was there but didn't play, Joe Salazar was there but didn't play... a LOT of notable players came by the tournament to "check things out" and visit with friends, but didn't play. This tournament is a "No Pro" tourney and the pro players, while some may visit, respect that and don't try to enter.

Thanks Randy.

This should clear up a lot of speculation about Rafeal's health and well being.
