I was at a tournament this weekend up at CJ's Billiard Palace here in Dallas and the great Rafael Martinez was there. He was the 2nd blind pick in the calcutta and it looked as if he was just getting in stroke when I had to leave. This was the first time that I had seen him play in person and he shot lights out before I left. I was just wondering if anybody had any good stories about this guy.

I 1st met rafael in Raliegh,N.C. A friend had just came back from Texas and met him so he gave me the heads up about him. It was the open tourney that weekend and as he said Rafael was there. He went for a few hundred bucks in the calcutta and from the info i had gotten i took half. Well he ends up in 3rd/4th place that weekend. I sure cashed in on that one and of course gave my friend the standard finders fee. I watched him in a 10-ball ring game playing 50 on the 5 and 50 on the 10 with Mark Tadd,Jimmy Mataya,Cliff Joyner and Keith Mccready. Rafael ran 5 racks! Needless to say they quit after a short period of games. The guy has a great poker face. LOL=)

Yeh, about 6 to 8 weeks ago, I walked in Family Billiards in San Francisco, and I thought I saw a ghost. I hadn't seen Rafael for 2+ years. He's been coming down everyday to practice until Reno. I hear he's on the road, and I guess I know where now. It was fun to hear his stories about all of the matches he's played. I wish him luck on the road!

Once at one of JOB's tournaments in Nashville, I left the poolroom about 3 am while Rafael and some young kids were trying to make a game. The next morning Rafael pulled up his pants to show me his knees all skinned up. He said he got the game he wanted, one race on foot across the back parking lot with the kid - but he didn't see the speed bump and wiped out in his dress shoes.

He's one of the scariest players on the planet. The hard inside kill master. When I get dead in stroke then I try to work in some of the things he does routinely with great ease.

Agreed! He's probably one of the greatest player's ever to shoot with his cue jacked up. I've seen him do some things I didn't think were possible.

Probably twelve years ago, when Raphael first hit the tour, he came through San Antonio. I managed a pool room and the owner of the room met him, liked him and decided to sponsor him. At the time, Raphael was ranked #8 in the world.
Part of his deal with the owner was to be the house pro which included playing in the weekly tournaments, giving lessons, etc. when he was not on the road or tour.
One of our local players, Eddie, never played for more than $2-3 9 ball.
One night, Eddie is mouthing off about how much his game has improved of late. I turn around and Raphael had just walked in. I thought by this time everyone knew about Raphael so as a joke I told Eddie, "See that guy up on the rail? I gave him the 7 and 8 and hosed him last week. Go ask him to play." Everyone laughed and I thought that was the end of it.
About 15 minutes later, I look to see Eddie and Raphael starting to play.
I walked over and asked Ed what he was doing. He said they were playing a race to seven for $35 which was astro bucks for Ed. Never saw Ed bet that much before or since.
I explained to Ed that I was kidding and that Raphael was ranked #8.
Raphael laid it down very well, beating Ed 7-4.
It took us another two days to convince Ed of what had happened. To this day, he has never forgave me. LOL

For being so small, Raphael has a very powerful stroke. Get him to show you some stroke trick shots if you can. Amazing.

I've seen Rafael play a lot. He use to be a regular at Hardtimes' monthly and weekly tournaments.

One thing that I remember most about Rafael, when he has a tough shot and walks around the table at least twice... LOOK OUT.. he about to do something that is worth watching...

Truely a creative person, especially at One Pocket...

The "kid" he raced was Marcus Chamaat, I was going to write about the race but decided to wait. It was when the Billiard Channel/Russell Stuart tournament was at JOB's, it was awesome to see the normally stoic Rafael hauling ass. If he didn't eat it he would have won the race.

I didn't see him do anything too creative while I was there. But then again, he could've been laying down a little. I wonder how long he'll be in town, and who he's going to try and match up with.

May be the best pure shotmaker alive today. No one can come with a bigger shot than Rafael. And he is a fearless gambler, ready to play the world.
If he wasn't beset with inner demons, we will never know how good he could have been.

At his best, he is the equal of anyone alive. And maybe the favorite for the money. Simple an incredible shotmaker. Unfortunately, we have only seen flashes of that brilliance for the last 15-20 years.
