Rail Dimensions For Carom Balls?

I have been thinking about making carom plugs for my 8 foot olhausen. In other words I want pocket stops to play the carom game on my pool table. The other day I realized that carom balls are bigger than american pool balls, which spurs this question. Is the apex of a carom table rail higher than that of a pool table? If so, would angles of deflection on a pool table with carom balls be different from that of a carom table?

Don't hate me if I respond to this thread on my own until a mechanic or other knowledgeble poster can read this.

Rubber cushions should be triangular in shape with the width of the cloth-covered cushion being between 1 7/8 [4.76 cm] and 2 inches [5.40 cm] measured from the outer edge of the featherstrip to the nose of the cushion. Rail height (nose-line to table-bed) should be 63 ½% (+1 %) or between 62 ½% and 64 ½ % of the diameter of the ball."
 
The hight of rail rubber for playing pocket pool is 1/64th of an inch over 1 7/16th's of an inch, and that is based on pocket pool balls being 2 1/4 in size. Carrom balls are much larger and therefore would hop off the rails when banked into them...so no, you can't intermix the 2 different games on the same table just by blocking off the pockets.
 
I've played 61.5mm carom balls on my Diamond Pro and GCI before that and have never had a problem with rail height and bouncing balls. I've managed to develop a respectible level of carom play on my pocket tables and with no pocket plugs.

Weight: 7 to 7 1/2 oz. / * Diameter: 2 27/64", 2 3/8", 2 7/16"

So, just out of curiosity, do you think the 2 7/16th's carom balls will hop or jump off your rails...or do you think they'll play just fine as well?
 
61.5mm carom balls are about 2 1/16th...in other words about the same size as snooker balls. What else do you play on your table...marbles?..LOL
 
2 7/16 is 61.91mm or a ball that has a diameter <1% larger than a 61.5mm ball. It would seem that a fraction of a millimeter shouldn't make a real difference in playability but only an on table trial would tell. I have a second set of carom balls. I'll measure those, and if they are >61.5mm, I'll hit them around and report back.
 
You need to check your math again...sorry. a 2 7/16" carom ball....slightly more than a 1 percent difference...don't you think? In fact...it's 3/16" of an inch larger in fact. One of the major drawbacks of coin-operated pool tables in the past is that they use to have to use a 2 3/8" over sized cue ball in order to separate it from the object balls which had serious tendency to want to hop off the rails.
 
Rikdee...not trying to argue with you buddy, it's just that the height of cushions based on the size of normal pool balls just don't quit work for the carom balls that are normaly used on carom tables by real carom players...that's all...not saying it can't be simulated with smaller carom balls on a pocket table...just saying that in my opinion you don't really get the same game that you'd get on a carom table.
 
A standard pool ball is 2.25" or 57.15mm
Super Aramith Pro Carom ball is 61.5mm or 2.42"

2 1/16" = 52.3875mm

Perhaps its your math that should be verified.

I was wrong on the conversion, you're right...but you still can't get the 2 7/16" carom balls to play right on a pocket table...:D
 
Thanks, you argue hard but in the end, you're an honorable guy.
I did check my other set of carom balls but they measure 61.5mm as well so I cannot observe the play of a ball of 2 7/16" or 61.9125mm in diameter.
 
Seldom do I ever make mistakes, but if I do, I'm never to proud to admit it. IF and when I do, it just reminds me that I am HUMAN....dammit!:D LMAO
