Raj Hundal defeated Rodney in the finals. Racing to 8, Rodney had Raj stuck 7 to 1, and Raj ends up beating the Rocket, 8 to 7. WOW! Great tournament for Raj, and a strong finish for American Rodney Morris! :)

I don't know very much about Raj Hundal except from what I have read on the Internet. :p

Rodney certainly is having a banner year. Coming in THIRD at the 2005 World Pool Championship in Taiwan, he's making great strides. Couldn't happen to a better fellow either!

I saw Raj run a 6 pack on R Alcano and Raj played great at the WPC too this year- IIRC, he should have beat Rodney and I know he knocked out some super champion in the early rounds.

Yeah, Raj is coming into his own. Presume you're talking about his win over Yang at the WPC. Then he lost double-hill to Rodney in the next round.

It's so cute seeing his buddies rally around him. Great win for Raj Hundal. :)

I'm sorry Rodney lost, but seeing Raj coming in first place in a major world tournament is a thrill for our British comrades. I just don't know much about him as a player except from what I have read. Has he ever played here in the U.S.?

To my recollection, Hundal has played at least three times on American soil, with little success.

August 2003 UPA Big Apple Nine Ball challenge in New York
August 2004 UPA Big Apple Nine Ball challenge in New York
December 2004 Inaugural event of the Hilton Tour in Florida

Just got back from watching the final and all i can say is wow. Raj played unbelivable from 7-1 down. It was a great night of pool, both semi finals and the final went to hill-hill. Hopefully Raj will now be in Vegas in december for the Mosconi Cup.

Now where's my vcash.................. ;) :D

Here is Raj Hundal's AzBilliards Player Profile: http://azbilliards.com/thepros/2000showplayer2005.cfm?playernum=1178

It doesn't seem he has played very often here in the States.

However, I do remember reading his name on the U.S. Open players list. So I guess we'll all get a chance to see him up front and close in a few weeks! :p

This list is incomplete. Wondering whether I'd imagined Hundal playing at the UPA Big Apple challenges, I looked it up. In case anyone cares, here are the brackets from 2003, evidencing Hundal's partiicpation.

He came to USA very few times. One time I told Tony chohan and his cousin about Hundal but Tony Rex or his cousin did not know about him.In the big apple brackets u see Hundel in the loosers bracket loosing to Imran after beating danny Harriman. lImran is also from England.Imran won more events in England closely followed by Raj.

I just got back also from watching a great day of pool. Morris was a little fortunate to win 8:7 over the Lion but he played a great length of the table back bank to deserve the win. In the final Morris was also 6:0 up! and at 7:5 he had a great opportunity to win the match but scrathed in the side. Raj played some great shots in the final and really seemed to relax. I think a few of the British guys are going to US Open and World Summit too. Just curious but does anyone know of any other "major" tournaments won by Brits, sjm I can hear you brain flicking back through time as I type! ;-)

One of the more recent items that comes to mind would be when Steve Davis faced off against Earl Strickland in the 2002 Mosconi Cup. Davis won that match and secured the Cup for the European team with his victory.

Not to my recollection. In fact, i can't even remember a top five by a Brit in a first-tier event. Only noteworthy performance I can ever remember by a Brit in a first-tier event was when Imran Majid won a couple of matches in the knockout stages of the WPC (was it 20003 or 2004?). Apologies to the Brits if I've overlooked something.

The 2005 Korea Open!!! he he :D

I guess in Europe they have done well, Peach has had top finishes Im sure and chenman won weert open. Think Davis came 5th in WPC once but not sure about anything else. WHat was best Steve Knight did when he was playing, sure he did well in States?

First, that dude who finshed high in Korea is a citizen of the world. Nobody is quite sure where he's from! You're right, I forgot about Steve Davis coming fifth at the 2000 WPC.

Finally, if the Brits need something to hold on to, here you go. Mika Immonen, 2001 World Champion, was, in fact, born in London at St Mary's Hospital (now know as the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead). About fifteen years earlier, another fellow you may be familiar with was born in that very same hospital...................... by the name of SJM.

Congratulations to Hundal and Morris as well on a superbly played final. With two spots available on the Mosconi Cup team I wouldn't be surprised to see Hundal included, although there are some other deserving players also....Hohmann, Lely. Two spots available and three deserving players (at least) makes me glad I'm not responsible for the selection of players.

Anyways, this is huge for pool in the UK and pool in general as well. With the just announced British Open the more recognition nine ball can get in the UK over the next 5 months leading up to the event the better.

....maybe more competition to make the Mosconi Team than you realize.

Hohmann, Souquet, Ortmann, Feijen, Tot, Immonen, VanDenBerg, Chamat, Roschkowski, and Hundal seem to be the most obvious candidates for the next European Mosconi Cup team.

Hohmann, Immonen and Feijen all appear assured a spot, and the case for Chamat's inclusion is a strong one, leaving two spots open for debate.

I'll make an argument for each of the others --

Tot deserves in because he attained the #1 ranking on Eurotour this year
Ortmann deserves in because he owned the #1 ranking on Eurotour last year
Lely should get in because he won two of the three events at the Europeans
VanDenberg deserves it because he finsihed fifth in the 2005 WPC
Hundal deserves it for winning the World Pool Masters
Roschkowski deserves it for general excellence in high-profile events
Souquet deserves it as an indisputable future hall of famer and proven veteran

Looks like a pretty tough choice for those choosing the next European Mosconi Cup team. Even Thomas Engert might have a shot. We shall see.

Two things that can be said for sure though: 1) it's a great day for British pool and 2) Europe will field a very strong team at the next Mosconi cup.
