This guy is one of the most dominating people in all of pool and I really don't know a lot about him. He wins a lot, is a gentlemen, has a perfect stroke, has a winning record over Efren, and is from Germany. But... what else?

Anybody have any stories about him? When did he first come into prominence in American pool? Does he gamble? If so, any gambling stories? What's this guy like in person?

I don't know a whole lot about his background but i have talked with him in person at DCC. The guy is a world class individual. We talked about his 9 ball matches and i really think he embodies exactly what a professional is. After he had lost a close match, he shrugged his shoulders and stated, "You know, it happens its part of pool." Ralf always seems to be positive regarding his wins and losses.

Saw him signing a cue ball for someone at the Straght Pool Worlds, and seems happy to do so.

Speaks English very well, also.

A German friend of mine who knows him says he used to have long blond hair before he shaved his head.

I'd like to see a picture of that.

Ralf is a great sportsman, at the same time he's a real gentleman. Very intelligent one. Runs his internet site (souquet.de). I talked with him pretty much and adore his precision game, no wonder he's been given The Surgeon nickname.
As truly said, he tries to be positive all the time, even if he loses. That's the reason rare exclusions are so memorable. Just like in 2005 at Kaoshiung: when he lost his group match at the WPC and it became obvious he won't proceed to play-offs, he was so mad about that fact and his play that he threw a bottle of water against the wall. I think it's the only matter when Ralf lost temper.
As far as I know Ralf does not gamble. I don't know the reason, nor I know if he did it ever.

Ralf has never gambled (according to Ralf).

Ralf

Very Easy To Talk To. At Dcc06 I Asked Him How Much He Practices. He Replied That With Travel And Playing (200+ Days A Year) He Doesn't Have That Much Time For It, His Matches Are His Practice. Realy Nice Person, Very Down To Earth.

The Danny DiLiberto Legend of Pool DVD that was released earlier this year by AZB'er DKolacz has a funny segment where Danny and Keith McCready have Ralf trapped between them during an after-tournament wrap-up, interview and general storytelling session. Ralf is gracious and accomodating, but Keith's hammering him a little bit here and there about gambling and you can tell that he's just waiting for an excuse to bolt.

I Love Ralf!!!!
Consider him as one of the best players in the world.. And the kindest...
Except when he pulled me out of the audience at the World Pool Masters with that trickshot...
Every tournament I see him we always give each other a hug and chat for a while...
Used to see him almost every month at a tournament but moved to the UK so him much less now...

But this weekend I'll see him again...
Gonna be fun..
Great tournament.. great matches coming up.. And for once I don't have to work at this tournament.. So I can spend my time watching!!!

Well everyone knows that Ralph is a great player, but he is also a great person. When he was in Athens, GA. a few years ago for one of the UPA events, he and Thorsten went out to a club with a group of us. I dont think it was like anything they had ever seen before. Two of the greatest players in pool today (that are from Germany) at a country bar.....lol. They seemed to have fun and it was nice chatting with them in another environment. They are both class acts and deserve their success.

That was you? Lol, I've got that on dvd with the rest of the show.

Ralf Souquet with long blonde hair! That would be something to see.

I find it amazing that someone of his caliber of play could have reached that level without ever gambling. That's very impressive.

It seems like no one knows much about his background. I think both him and Thorsten are both machines in disguise. Because they both came from utter obscurity to be major forces in the pool world.

The little I've heard of his background is from Danny D tapes. He's mentioned before on the Joss (?) tour back in the 80s that Ralf was someone you wanted to draw because he wasn't a world beater. He was just another pro on the tour, with never a threat to win an event. And now, he's bound for the HOF (I hope)

I also have always enjoed watching Ralf at the Mosconi Cup when they're held in Europe. With the Euro audience really on the side of the Euro Team, Ralf lets his emotions show a lot more (both highs and lows)

Here are pics from the Mosconi Cups of past. Now how often do you see this Ralf Souquet?

At this years Mosconi Cup, Ralf was playing very good and they were a real team. What was Mika thinking when he screwed up 2 9balls only god knows....
Gambling is not very common here in Europe.People in pool halls almost never play for money.I have never been asked to play for money. We play for beer or morning coffee:p Losers pay table time ofourse. And I don`t know what`s with cash and americans.I play pool for fun, for pride, but certanly not to make money.Part of your culture I guess...

The final out Ralf made in the semifinals of the 2006 World Pool Championships was amazing. I think it was hill-hill and I think it was the 7-ball that he had to make?

It was one of the best pressure shots I've ever seen.

It might be on Youtube?

I don't even have the dvd.. still think i should have gotten it..for free off course... without me the show wouldn't be the same.. ;)

it's been broadcasted a few times here in England.. Pretty embarrassing when people remind me... Was giggling all the time.. Wish I knew it beforehand so I would have worn my jeans.. ;)

i think the key to his success is his attitude.despite his greatness he knows he cant win every match so after a loss he saysthats just pool and goes to the next one.Earl, are you listening?
